New clinic in Clonakilty provides focused care for people suffering from scars, oedema and wounds

Opening Helios Clinic in Clonakilty has marked a significant milestone in the professional journey of Orla Gallagher, who brings over two decades of experience as a registered general nurse.

Orla worked in Intensive Care in Dublin before returning to Clonakilty to work at Bushmount and Fairfield Nursing Homes. After recognising a gap in services in West Cork, she decided to specialise further in Tissue Viability Nursing, Lymphoedema Therapy, and Scar Therapy. Throughout her career, she has had the privilege of helping many people through their healing processes and her decision to set up Helios Clinic stemmed from a desire to provide focused care for individuals facing the challenges of scars, oedema, and wounds.

Through her work, Orla has seen firsthand how scars — whether from surgery, burns, or injury —can cause both physical discomfort and emotional distress. Lymphoedema and chronic wounds also present significant challenges for those affected. Orla recognised the opportunity to create a space where people could access compassionate and professional care tailored to their needs, which became the foundation of Helios Clinic.

At Helios Clinic, Orla offers clinical support for a range of conditions. Her goal is simple: to improve patients’ comfort, functionality, and quality of recovery.

Scar therapy is a gentle treatment that helps improve the feel, appearance, and function of scars. Scars can sometimes cause tightness, discomfort, or restricted movement, even years after they’ve formed. Whether the scar is from surgery (such as a C-section or joint replacement), injury, or burn, scar therapy works to reduce discomfort, improve flexibility, and support overall healing.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle therapy that stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce swelling and promote healing. It’s particularly beneficial for people recovering from surgery, injury, cancer treatment, or managing lymphoedema. MLD helps reduce inflammation, ease discomfort, and support recovery.

Orla provides care for complex and chronic wounds such as surgical wounds and pressure ulcers, addressing not only the wound itself but also the factors that may hinder healing. Each treatment is designed to promote effective healing and restore quality of life, with a focus on delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.
