The Dunmanway Branch of Comhaltas will host Fleadh Cheoil Chorcaí 2019 from April 26-28. Over 250 competitions will be held over the weekend, in both Maria Immaculata Community College and the Parkway Hotel, with competitions in music, singing and story-telling and comhrá gaeilge.
Competitions are divided into age categories, under 12, 12- 15; 15-18 years and Senior. All competitions are open to members and non-members of Comhaltas, and include the full range of musical instruments. There are also competitions for singing in sean-nós and English, as well as whistling and lilting. Story-telling in Irish and English and comhrá gaeilge are also included.
Besides the competitions there is a selection of events to suit all tastes. Whether you are a singer or a story-teller, or even a good listener, everybody is urged to participate.
Upwards of 5,000 people are expected over the weekend and the people of Dunmanway are busy preparing for the influx of musicians, singers, dancers and spectators – a welcome early start to the tourist season.
As a fore-runner to the Fleadh the committee has organised a concert at the Parkway Hotel on Friday March 8 starting at 7.30 pm. This concert will feature a selection of Cork’s winners at the Munster and All-Ireland Fleadhanna last year and promises to be a memorable evening of traditional entertainment. Groups performing on the night will include the local Dunmanway Comhaltas group, joined by groups from, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Ballincollig, Aghinagh, Bantry and a special performance from the Comhaltas Baile Núis All-Ireland winning Pléaracha Group.
