Stress has a genuine physiological impact on your physical and mental health while a certain level of stress can be motivating, energising, and help you perform at your best. Excessive levels of stress can exhaust the body, affect your digestion, disrupt sleep, impair your thinking, cause the body to feel anxious, raise blood pressure and alter how your body uses energy. This often leads to cravings for sweets or other substances and can leave you feeling run down and unwell.
Stress activates the body’s sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ response which is designed to work in harmony with the bodies parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ response to help the body manage stress and feel rested and rejuvenated.
Chronic levels of stress affects the balance between the sympathetic and para sympathetic systems and research shows that excessive stress can lead to hormone imbalances, weaken your immune system, disrupt your heart rhythm, alter your metabolism, raise your blood pressure, lower your pain threshold and leaving you more susceptible to infections.
Including good stress management techniques and therapies into your life has many benefits including improvements to your overall health and wellbeing.
Two therapies that are wonderful for reducing stress and improving your mental and physical health are acupuncture and hypnotherapy.
Acupuncture reduces stress in many ways; for example it regulates the autonomic nervous system, helping to calm the sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ response, enhancing relaxation and improving sleep quality. Acupuncture will also stimulate the release of endorphins (the body’s natural mood enhancers) and reduces cortisol levels ( the hormone associated with stress), and this combination reduces anxiety. Additionally, acupuncture restores the flow of Qi (energy), enhances blood flow, easing symptoms of physical and emotional stress including muscle tension and headaches.
Hypnotherapy reduces stress by guiding individuals into a deeply relaxed state where the mind is more open to positive suggestions. This relaxation helps lower anxiety and decrease cortisol. During hypnotherapy, the therapist can help reframe negative thoughts, promote healthier coping mechanisms, and enhance feelings of calm and control. By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can also address the root causes of stress, leading to lasting behavioural changes and improved mental wellbeing.
