Every year, around this time, I remind you all to have a good root through your underwear, a really good honest look. You might be able to get away with less-than-perfect underwear during the colder months but this is not so easy as layers of clothing are shed. This is when underwear comes into its own. Lighter tops and dresses or trousers mean that good fitting and enhancing underwear is critical. Do not allow underwear to be an ‘afterthought’, it makes such a difference to your shape in clothes.

Immediately let go of ‘gone-off-white’ bras and knickers – you are simply not allowed to keep them until next Winter. There is a psychology to style and looking good and how you feel in your clothes, and imperfect underwear is a perfect example of something that will stop you from holding yourself straighter and taller and being more confident. A good foundation is key whereas a thrown-together one will result in a far-from-good finished product- –no matter what you try to do to cover it up!

The bottom line is that, whatever age we’re at, our bodies are constantly changing. We lose a little, we gain a little, or our weight stays the same, but our shape can change somewhat, which can really affect how you feel about yourself. While we can work at changing some things, other things just have to be accepted.

Plan a little shopping trip for underwear only. Falling under the ‘self care’ category, it is always sure to put a smile on your face. I have mixed feelings about support knickers, as they work for some and not for others, so you will need to put the work in here and research the best type for your body shape. If you find a great pair, buy two or three in case you have a series of events to attend. You don’t need to wear support knickers everyday, in fact, I highly disagree with the idea that you should. Keep them for that special ‘controlled’ feeling and look for special events so that you feel set apart from the everyday humdrum!

Make sure that your bras fit you properly and are comfortable. Comfort is always key because our bodies are always changing. It might mean that you need to overhaul what you have and get measured and then replace. The band can get stretchy from wear, the cups can and do sag. If you wear underwire bras, the wire can eventually poke or dig in, indicating a loss of structure. If the straps keep falling down then they have been stretched beyond their elastic limit so it’s ‘bye-bye time.

There is an ongoing debate about how often you should change your bra but the bottom line is that you should change your bra regularly. It’s good for the bra too, it gives it a chance to rest, as some bras have a heavy load to support…ye lucky ducks!

While we all will have a stock of ‘cheap and cheerful’ underwear, it’s nice to have some really quality underwear also for special occasions. That said, I believe that every day is a special occasion and we should never take tomorrow for granted so wear the lovely underwear as often as you so desire. Let it be the treat that you give yourself and go buy lots more ‘special occasion’ knickers and bras. The variety of colours and colour mixes available is sure to cheer you up. Gone are the days of plain old cotton knickers, there are some gorgeous organic cotton styles out there. Read up on the best material to wear closest to your body and seek it out – heavily processed means a lot of chemicals are added and we now know that some materials have been proven to be hormone disruptors.

Shopping local is very important in West Cork, we need to support the boutiques and jewellery shops and shoe shops and we have some beautiful shops all around us. That said, re-using and recycling clothes is something that also needs to be considered. With costs rising everywhere and a surplus of waste in the world, more and more women are re-wearing outfits many times over. Swap parties among groups of friends have taken off and charity shops are another great way to find a cheaper item. ‘Vinted’ has become the new ‘go-to’ for so many, particularly crews of women who have four or five weddings to attend a year. Many are buying a gorgeous pre-owned dress on Vinted (sometimes with the tags still on) wearing the dress for an occasion, washing or dry cleaning and selling it on again on Vinted. It is a great way to buy designer gear at a fraction of the cost and with buyer protection, you are guaranteed a quality piece. It’s a great way to clear out your wardrobe, a seamless process where the buyer pays postage and your Vinted balance goes up. You can translate the money to your bank account, but why do that when you can have loads of fun buying something else. So a bit late to the game, I finally downloaded the app and sold quite a few Karen Millen dresses and coats…and lots of other coats!

So did I buy anything on Vinted? I was so shocked and pleasantly surprised to buy two pairs of Francis Brennan PJs, with tags still on, for €10 each: Retailing at €40 each in Dunnes Stores, the quality of these pyjamas is top notch, so that was a real win for me.

So get cracking on clearing out your underwear – your body and mind will thank you for it.that smile that creeps across your face when you find something to wear that you absolutely love … and that loves you back by looking heavenly on your body!

Shopping for a wedding dress is something many girls dream about for years, so who am I to tell any bride-to-be which style she should choose? That said, the experience can bring a mix of confusion, excitement, pressure, and overwhelm, so I am going to offer a few pieces of tried-and-tested advice.

There’s no strict rule about when to begin shopping for your wedding dress, but starting around a year before your big day is generally recommended. Gowns often take several months to arrive once ordered, and you’ll also need to allow time for fittings and alterations, so giving yourself about 12 months feels just right.

Just as important is choosing who to bring with you on the big shop. The people by your side should truly know you – your style, your personality, and what makes you feel your best. Very few brides find ‘the one’ on their first appointment, and a small number fall in love with the very first dress they try on. That’s why honesty, patience, encouragement, and plenty of love are essential throughout the experience.

Bridal sizing can be weird and wonderful and be prepared to have pins put in when they don’t quite fit you…all of this takes time. It’s also worth wearing a good, non-marking deodorant, as you’ll be changing in and out of dresses more times than you can count. The bright lights of changing rooms and high-charged emotions may lead to a a feeling of discomfort and cause sweatiness so it’s worth coming prepared.

While alterations are a standard part of the process, they are an extra cost, so make sure to include this in your dress budget. This is a cost that will not be cheap and should not be cheap, so be prepared for it. Also bear in mind that bridal shops have sample dresses that can be bought straight off the rack. I’m not going to go into the subject of what a dress should cost: I have seen €5,000 dresses that looked just about alright and €500 dresses that were sensational, so work with what you have. Vintage and heirloom dresses are climbing in popularity. There are a lot of grandmothers out there who wore stunning dresses and many of these dresses, with minor alterations, are dying to be worn again. You cannot put a price on sentimentality and I have seen some truly fabulous re-invented wedding dresses. The bottom line here is that you should never feel pressured to spend thousands on a wedding dress because there are stunning dresses available at every bride’s budget point.

A wedding dress should be romantic and ethereal and breathtaking but also wearable and comfortable (so important). Style would be very boring if we all liked the same thing or shape or colour and this is so true when it comes to a wedding dress. A wedding dress trend is simply ‘whatever your heart desires’, as we see designers and brides-to-be embrace lace, tulle, chiffon, bows, a coat effect, A-line, ball gown, decorative buttons, strapless, fully-sleeved, bubble hems, midi-length, sparkling embellishments, removable pieces and, for the girl who hates dresses, a wedding trouser suit with a really long tail on the jacket. In other words, everything, from simplicity to intricacy!

To veil or not to veil? Social media has so many flaws but when it comes to looking for ideas for wedding style, it gets 100/10. If there was one piece of advice that I could give you on this, it’s to be very aware of the weight of a headpiece or veil and how long you have to wear it for – so choose very carefully!

2026 is already seeing a diverse range of colours for bridesmaid’s dresses. Beautiful soft blush tones, rich burgundies, sage greens, floral patterns – the list goes on and on and on. There is now a heightened focus on sustainability and versatility. Designers are creating dresses that bridesmaids will cherish and repeat wear many times after the wedding – and brides are loving this.

Luxurious satin, dreamy chiffon, velvet, crepe and lightweight materials for those hotter months (debatable), so many options. When it comes to styling trends, a rapidly and much-loved emerging trend is the ‘mix-and-match’. This allows bridesmaids to express their own style while also maintaining a cohesive look. The colours are co-ordinated, the designs are different, but the overall wedding theme is captured and glorified. Designers truly believe that this trend enhances the overall aesthetic, yet it also adds comfort and confidence.

When it comes to the groomsmen and the all-important wedding suit, here’s the truth. We often joke about how easy men have it when it comes to getting dressed for a wedding – and the funniest part is, it really can be that simple. Locally, we’re lucky to have an incredible suit hire business, Deasy’s, offering a fantastic selection of high-quality wedding attire, making the whole process smooth and stress-free for the groom and his crew.

Many couples still favour a very formal look for the big day – classic, tailored suits that look incredibly sharp in photographs while remaining comfortable to wear. While destination weddings in sunnier climates continue to grow in popularity, for many couples there’s still no place like home when choosing where to say ‘I do’.

Naturally, the style of suit can vary depending on the setting. A church or hotel ceremony often calls for something more traditional and polished, whereas a destination celebration or relaxed at-home wedding may inspire a lighter, more laid-back look. One final piece of advice: remind him to break in his shoes beforehand. Brand-new, stiff shoes can lead to sore feet – and this is one day when he’ll want to be on the dancefloor from the first song to the last!

I’m going to finish with the most important detail of the day – enjoy every minute of your wedding experience, including the build-up to the big day. Undoubtedly there will be little hitches along the way – it’s all part of the journey – but do take the time to enjoy every moment.

Keep in mind that fashion fades but style is forever and remember that confidence and joy are always the most beautiful accessories.

Happy New Year, here we go again! Whether you are deflated and exhausted or pumped and ready for action to complete your New Year’s resolutions, there is no denying that January is the bleakest of months…but it will pass. We have had some wonderful dry and cold weather, perfect for wearing those beautiful long wool coats. Does anyone else find that packing away Christmas decorations has a ripple effect and leads to clearing away unworn clothes too? If the bug bites you, go for it! We all have too much ‘stuff’. As a result, the ‘sale’ shopper has become more picky, more cautious and less inclined to just buy something because it is 50 per cent off – now, we think carefully about waste and clutter.

The savvy shopper knows that a good cut will last as long as your body shape doesn’t change, that is if you take care of your clothes. Think ‘timeless’ all the time. Sale time becomes a calculated journey of sifting through quality pieces at a fraction of the cost and being realistic about what will work well with your current wardrobe. Having the confidence to leave something behind because it’s ‘just not right’ rather than ‘I might be able to make this work even though…’ is paramount. Undoubtedly there are bits and pieces that we all want and need or should replace and if you can find it in a sale, that’s fantastic! Better still if you have vouchers for your favourite shops, you might just make a killing.

Coats will always be a really big deal and tend to be much sought-after in sales. Our weather is so unpredictable that we need something warm but breathable and lightweight and waterproof that is also stylish. The best way is to buy a few coats…between all of them, they will tick all of the boxes! A faux fur bomber-style jacket won’t work for a walk in the rain but it will make you feel a million dollars on an evening out. Jeans that fit like a glove or the perfect baggy pair offer practicality and style so if they are available for a fraction of the regular price, buy them. Of course you simply must check out all of your local boutiques, they need to ‘shift’ everything as they don’t have huge warehouses to store surplus clothes. Space is paramount and this is where you just might find some ‘to die for’ deals before new stock takes over. Always push yourself a little bit outside your comfort zone but keep in mind that an unusual piece does need to be able to work comfortably into your capsule wardrobe. Impulse buying is unsustainable behaviour so make a wish list of what you need and regularly check it when you are shopping. The bigger ‘high street’ shops have a way of bamboozling the brain with clever advertising and layout and massive reductions that might just have you splurging on something beyond ridiculous. Don’t beat yourself up if you have fallen for this on more than one occasion – when you donate it to a charity shop later on, it might just bring so much joy to someone else!

When I shop in the sales, I try to buy designer pieces, as they have the ability to elevate any ‘high street buys’ when worn together. Ballet flats are firmly back for Spring but I have spotted lots of gorgeous pairs in the sales also. A gorgeous tuxedo-style black jacket you might think would only be worn a few times a year but something like this is an investment piece that you will wear year after year. Wear it with jeans and a white tee shirt anytime for effortless glam.

Sparkly or sequin clothes, especially silver or gold pieces, are great to snap up now. Traditionally, we only wore this type of glam for Christmas parties or New Year’s but I find I’m wearing them a lot more now. As an avid concert-goer and music festival queen, I love adding wow any time of year with a sparkly jacket. The bottom line is that life has become way too serious and glitter or sparkle is exactly the right amount of fun that we all need from time to time. Make sure to dedicate a section of your wardrobe to ‘fun’ clothes, you know those pieces that make you giggle. A Santa suit made an appearance in our house on Christmas Day, it was what we all needed after a November and December of huge losses. A fun section in your wardrobe is as critical as good fitting knickers!

Layering necklaces have been ‘the thing’ for a while and we are loving them. Whether you love silver or gold, both look incredible and some three-in-one combo’s offer a mix of the two. Don’t forget to have a browse in your local jewellery shop, exactly what you love might just be on sale.

Runners, trainers, sneakers – whatever you call them, it’s a super time to add to your collection. Now worn with absolutely everything, you can never have too many pairs. Don’t feel bad about having a selection because minding your feet and keeping them cosy and comfortable is beyond important. You might not win this argument with Jimmy Choo’s or Manola’s but runners, yes, always!

I have always had a thing for umbrella’s, we do live in a country where it rains a hell of a lot so my ‘thing’ makes sense. What I can never understand is why so many people, especially women, rely on a cheap €5 umbrella. They only last five minutes and rip or crack or won’t open. I bought a really good one about 10 years ago, it has a wooden hook handle so if it doesn’t fit in my bag, it can hang on the strap of it. The same goes for my big umbrella – on the outside it’s a plain grey but on the inside there are sketches of animals and it makes me smile every time I open it.

Who doesn’t have a big basket full of hats? A great woolly hat is an instant statement piece and adds a cosy flair to any winter outfit, whether you are going for a casual or a more polished look. They allow us to express our unique fashion sense and perfectly merge fashion with function. Sometimes a hat can be the only pop of colour in an otherwise dark ensemble and they are great for hiding bad hair days or for protecting a blowdry from the wind or rain. So finish off any outfit with a hat and fill your basket this January.

July – the ‘outdoor month’ closely associated with summer gatherings, glorious sunsets, garden parties, BBQs and hot sun – screams Summer. Like it or not, July is the month where we all bare a little or a lot more skin. For some of us, the idea of stripping off and wearing lighter (and sometimes more revealing) clothes can be a complete head wreck because the winter season allows us to hide away and to cover up. This time of year we can struggle with how to shop, what to wear and, more importantly, how to feel comfortable in what we wear. Chin up, you are not alone.

Living in Ireland, we are never guaranteed consecutive sunny or even dry days so the life-saving and hair-saving pocket umbrella should always be snuggling in the bottom of your summer bag. Like the confidence we have in knicker-elastic, that faithful umbrella will give you the confidence to go about your day, free from the worry that your ‘look’ will be destroyed, your hair flattened and your fake tan run off! I was invited to a wedding once where, rather than disposable cameras or keepsakes, one of the groomsmen gave out pocket umbrellas at the door of the church…the sun was beaming as we walked in so many guests chose not to take the very clever gift. While the ceremony was on, the heavens opened, in fact we struggled to hear the beautiful music, such was the banging and slamming of the rain against the roof. The scene leaving the church was ever-so-comical with a stampede of frantic women in heels, grabbing and shoving and pushing to get those pocket umbrellas!

Whether you are a simple gal who prefers wearing a perfect pair of denim shorts for the entire summer or a badass fashionista dying for any excuse to wear a bright floral maxi dress, you are a winner. Wide brimmed straw hats add a WOW factor to anything and before you argue that hats don’t suit you, they suit absolutely everyone – you just haven’t tried on enough of them in different styles and with different degrees of floppiness. Many of us don’t feel comfortable looking at ourselves in the mirror, the face in particular (our brain has a negativity bias so will always look for what is wrong), and hats draw attention to the face when you are the one trying it on. However, when you wear a hat, it is the best hair and face camouflage, giving an overall more stylish look from an onlookers perspective.

I love the word ‘notions’. ‘That one has notions about herself’…we have all heard that phrase or maybe even said it about someone a few times. Life can be so tricky, so difficult and maybe even so heartbreaking for some, that those ‘notions’ might be all that a person has to keep themselves going! Style can sometimes be a way to express those ‘notions’ and I think that is such a beautiful thing. There is sincerity, sensitivity, vulnerability and bravery in getting up everyday and choosing the clothes that you wear to identify yourself. What I might wear may be considered outrageous by you and vice versa but, like an armour, it is our second ‘thicker’ skin that adds confidence and security.

The more I study, the more I see the beauty in the individuality of fashion and style. There is no old-fashioned, only the yearning to cling on to a happier time maybe? There is no punk, only a journey down the exploratory road of how to decompress. Studies show that listening to heavy metal music, rather than stir up people’s anger, represents a healthy way to process anger in a productive way.

This July, wear whatever the hell you want. I mean that! Buy everything in sight if it makes you feel better or buy nothing at all. Don’t fall for what you should be wearing, wear what makes you feel alive, we get one shot at this life and whether or not you are in style, out of style or feel you have no style, does it really matter? At the end of the day, or the end of your life, will that bag or those shoes that you are now drooling over but can’t afford (which makes you feel less than) be a priority? I can’t curse here but just imagine a load of curse words followed by NO as the answer to that question!

‘It’s easy for you’, a common phrase thrown out when someone believes that you look better than them or thinner or younger than them. ‘You could wear a refuse bag and still look good!’. Let’s clear this one up, I have never seen anyone look good in a refuse bag and it’s not ‘easy’ for anyone. This is how your brain tricks you into believing that you are not good enough, it fixates on someone else to compare you to. Learn how to override that rubbish talk that goes on inside your head. We are all as unique as our fingerprints, we come in different shapes and sizes and colours and there are beautiful clothes (expensive and inexpensive) for every single one of us. But it is never anything to do with the clothes, is it? It’s all about how you feel about yourself and…get a f**king pocket umbrella!

Time is free yet it is priceless. We can never own it but we can use it and spend it; but once we have lost it, we can never get it back because it is a nonrenewable resource. If you are waiting for the perfect time to do something or to wear something, don’t wait, the time may never be just right. When and if, two words that often push our hopes and dreams into the abyss of the future. How many times have you stopped yourself from wearing something because you decided that ‘someone like you’ couldn’t wear it or because you need to lose some weight to look better in it or because you would never look as good as ‘all the others’. The trouble is that you are spending too much time thinking and not enough time living life. Summer is here, grab it with both hands ever so tightly and to hell with white legs or fat calves or varicose veins or whatever obstacles that prevent you from wearing that dress or putting on those shorts! Perfectionism has taken over our psyche and it is destroying our natural zest for life.

Jewel bright slingbacks add just a little height. Pic: Batemans

There is nothing better than getting your toes out in the sunshine. While we all have, in the name of fashion, worn uncomfortable shoes to be taller or trendy, footwear can make or break your mood… and your back! The summer of 2023 shoe trends offer an exciting assortment of practical and minimalist to fashion-forward options. Sporty sneakers, embellished ballerina flats, Mary Jane pumps and a wonderful collection of sandals offer a variety of choices to even the pickiest shopper. The humble ballerina shoe or pump is a fashion must-have and this is a super way to inject colour into your summer wardrobe. From yellow to pink to nude or green, buy as many colours as your budget allows; with the addition of insoles or inserts, even the most flat-footed among us can comfortably wear them. They are a no fuss yet instant glamour, light shoe, perfect for day and all night wear.

The wedge returns and is the ideal summer addition for those seeking height and comfort. You can rush out to buy some new ones or wear the ones that you have tucked away in the back of the wardrobe because the comeback styles include new bright colours but also a mixture of what has been ‘out’ before. Sophisticated sporty sneakers, some retro-inspired with a contemporary touch, can be paired with anything from spring dresses to tailored trousers, shorts, skirts and jeans…so why wouldn’t you pick up a pair. I am a fanatic for clean sneakers, let’s just say it is probably ‘many-a-washing-machine’ that I have murdered washing sneakers – but my technique has gotten better; now I only wash them with lots of towels to make sure that my machine has a long and healthy life! Perhaps they are not the most ideal footwear for the hottest summer days but I generally go from flip-flops to sneakers for most of the season. Micro heels have completely taken over from the much higher heels; most often we all just want a little height without the foot pain and these heels provide exactly that. They are the ideal summer shoe for the days that you want to feel a bit more ‘pulled together’. Many of the styles available are a thong sandal or a sling-back with a kitten heel attached and the colours available are simply divine.

Who doesn’t love some sparkle or a few gems here and there. Embellished footwear should no longer be reserved for evening wear. Crystal studded pumps and sliders look incredible with jeans and a t-shirt, don’t save them, just wear them for an instant bit of glam and a whole lot of compliments.

Block colour dresses can be worn multiple times and accessories with almost anything.
Pic: Gooseberry, Clonakilty

While we have all become wizards when it comes to re-inventing our summer clothes, and this is a fantastic thing, as there will always be those new summer essentials required to top up our ample summer wardrobe. However Whites, I can’t say this enough, will only last a certain length of time and then need to be laid to rest FOREVER. We can get away with so much more with other colours; they tend to last longer and live to be re-invented. I spotted the most gorgeous tan/caramel safari style knee length, semi-fitted, short sleeve dress on a beautiful woman the other day. As bold as always, I marched straight over to compliment and enquire about where she had purchased it. She said that it was hanging in her wardrobe for a few years and she decided to wear it again…needless to say it was so stylish in an effortless chic way. I can’t say enough about block colour dresses, especially in a muted shade, you can wear them multiple times and accessorise with just about anything or any colour. Belts, wedges, pumps, a straw hat, a colourful bag, the choice is limitless. We all have dresses like this, perhaps we have pushed them to the back of the wardrobe or for whatever reason they have fallen out of favour, but a good cut and colour will allow you to reinvent it, time and time again.

While headbands are doing the rounds as the official ‘wedding head gear’ this season, there is no reason why you can’t add a more casual version to your day-to-day summer wardrobe. They are a super way to add colour and class in an instant and it doesn’t matter whether you have short or long hair, google how to make it work for your hairstyle or shape of your face. The big straw sun hat is no longer just for the beach, you need to wear it whenever you are out and about. Not only does it protect coloured hair but it protects your scalp from the hot sun that we are now becoming somewhat accustomed to…and it is super stylish too, especially with big sunglasses in tow.

What can I say about crocs? Well it’s officially a Croc-Girl-Summer! Whether you are firmly in Camp Croc or can’t stand them, crocs are everywhere now. On the plus side they are great for breathability, can be supremely comfortable and give excellent traction (for whatever you might be up to) even outside of the garden. For an extra sense of individuality, you can accessorise your crocs with charms, they are super cute and not just for kids. I must admit that my daughter has a bright yellow pair with Winnie the Pooh charms and heart jibbitz on them and I will leave the house wearing them some day, if she ever takes them off. Podiatrists recommend that you spend a little on your crocs to make sure that they don’t damage your feet.

The early bird will always get to choose the juiciest of worms and this is also true when it comes to shopping for summer clothes. While our wardrobes will have plenty of bits and summer firm favourites to bring back out again, now is the time to shop for anything that needs replacing or to add some of this season’s ‘to die for’ colour palette. It probably won’t surprise you that, particularly since lockdown, more and more shoppers are taking the time to read the labels on clothes, look at the material mix and where the clothes are made. While the younger shopper is still splurging on fast fashion, according to a new study, the over 35s are more cautious now. We not only want to look good in our clothes but we also want to know that the material they are made from is not detrimental to our health.

The term ‘Skin Deep’ is something that is familiar to all of us but have you really thought about what it means? It means superficial or not deep or longlasting. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and because it is porous, it absorbs everything that we put on it. Many studies now show that what we put on our skin goes a lot deeper than what you might have originally thought and can last for a long time or indefinitely. While we have all become more careful about what skincare products we use, have you ever thought about the fabric or material that you put on your body and how that might affect you?

Did you know that synthetic fibres dislodged from clothing are a major cause of acute or chronic inflammation and inflammation is the root cause of all disease? There are more than 8,000 chemicals in the textile industry! Isn’t that figure just insane? A recent Greenpeace report detected a range of toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde and phthalates in clothing and they are not listed on the tags. The most dangerous fabrics are rayon, polyester and spandex – and how we love these! Other signs that clothes could have something harmful in them is when a label says ‘wrinkle-free’, non-iron or moisture-wicking. We want convenience, but as a result, our bodies are silently (until a disease is identified) paying a very heavy price for it. Wrinkle-free clothing, in particular, is treated with formaldehyde and while we associate formaldehyde with embalming fluid and particleboard, it has never been something that we would have thought was in our clothes. PFAs (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in clothing for decades and they are known as ‘forever chemicals’ as they take thousands of years to break down in our environment. They are connected to many health issues, primarily cancer and infertility but also rashes, asthma, headaches, blurred vision and chronic fatigue. Wearing these clothes, particularly in hot weather can be even more dangerous. As your skin temperature goes up significantly to let out sweat and toxins, the doors are also open to absorb three to four times more of whatever could be on or touching your skin. A leading dermatologist tells all patients with skin issues and asthma to only choose fabrics that are 100 per cent cotton.

While there are legal limitations for chemicals in children’s toys, there are no regulations for children’s clothing. Imagine, our most vulnerable tiny humans can be exposed to ‘forever chemicals’ (that break down the immune system) in clothing from the moment that they are born. Informed new parents are now actively searching for and buying only organic clothes for their infants, starting out the healthy and right way! Perhaps the next time that you are choosing a baby gift for a new tiny person, you might remember this. It may cost a little more but you are investing in a healthy immune system for that baby…and that is priceless.

I guess knowing that approximately 63 per cent of the materials used for clothing manufacture are virgin plastics, compared to three per cent of recycled fabrics is enough to inform you that our environment is being negatively impacted on a massive scale too. We hear so much about this on a daily basis but it might take another few years before the materials in our clothes will become part of our day to day conversation.

Whichever way you choose to go, top dermatologists recommend that when you buy new clothes, the first thing that you should do is to wash them before you wear them. Protect your skin at all costs, it is the uniform provided by the body and it is not something that you can change on a daily basis.

Some eco-friendly materials to detox your wardrobe include organic cotton, lyocell or tencel (organic form of rayon), hemp or organic hemp, linen or organic linen, organic wool, alpaca (similar to cashmere) and silk. Whether you are going tomorrow or next week, start shopping for holiday essentials now so that you get everything that you need and more. Summer is all about ease so you should be able to spice up your wardrobe stress-free. Bermuda shorts are huge this year, you can team them with a button down shirt for day wear, or a bikini top for beach wear. Denim is ‘ultra-baggy’ this season with mid-rise waists everywhere. You will probably smile when you see patchwork denim popping up all over the place. Mini-fit-and-flare dresses from 2010 have most definitely made a big comeback; these are the perfect summer dress if we get last year’s tropical weather again! Sliders are huge but be careful, they are not meant for driving in. you can pick them up in any colour or why not pick up a few pairs.

Mermaid-esque dresses are being snapped up by savvy shoppers, these dresses were inspired by the live-action The Little Mermaid movie and designers moved in quickly so that you can feel like a goddess for an evening event.

While brighter, more vibrant colours typically dominate between the months of May and September, Valentino really embraced ALL BLACK everything for summer 2023. I know that those of you who love black all year round will absolutely love this! The top five colours this season are Magenta (the colour of the year), beige, lime green, soft blue and any metallic shade. There are whispers of violet and red around too. Use these colours as a guide to build your summer wardrobe, undoubtedly you will have some of these colours already so wear them to your heart’s content.

Feeling beautiful is a decision, always remember that. For some of you, baring more skin in the summer can raise anxiety levels, especially if you are not comfortable with your weight. Be gentle with yourself, surround yourself with beautiful colours and beautiful kind people.

‘We are as beautiful as our thoughts. Make those thoughts count’.

Coco Chanel is reputed to have said, ‘The best things in life are free, the second-best things are very, very expensive’. I must admit that the second part of that quote is up for debate. Rising costs have been hitting us squarely in the jaw for sometime now, leaving many people with no option but to significantly cut back, on just about everything, or at the very least, question and think about what to prioritise and what to discard. A recent survey still rates ‘image’ in the top three priorities associated with leading a contented and happy life. What does this mean? Are we cutting back in other areas of our lives just so we can still look good? What if I told you that there are so many ways that you can slash your image budget and still look and feel amazing?

Have you ever heard the expression ‘She’s all fur coat and no knickers’! I laugh every time I hear my daughter’s friend say it…because it epitomises how so many people live these days. What it means is that some people would spend all of their money on a flash coat and then not have anything left to buy essential pieces, like underwear! The not-so-funny part is that the pressure on everyone to slot into the ‘looking good’ box means that this happens a hell of a lot more than any of us would like to admit. Faced with adversity (if that’s what you want to call it) we need to assess, recalibrate and realign with a more sensible approach to how we look, and as a result, how we feel about how we look. We are living in an amazing world and there are signs and signals and answers and solutions everywhere we look in nature! There is a Yin to every Yang, but we have to look a little deeper than just skimming across the surface.

Did you know that a banana peel is considered ‘Nature’s botox’? This is the answer to all of your prayers if you are nervous (and rightfully so) of having something injected into your face or neck. I should say a big thank you to all of the cosmetologists who have offered me free botox down through the years, I have always declined but am grateful for the fact that my opinion and review is much sought after. I decided, quite a while ago, never to go down this road. So I research alternative remedies, and yes, rubbing the inside of a banana peel to your face and neck does make a remarkable difference. It also has a cumulative effect so the more you do it, the better you look. Banana peel is full of ingredients that the skin craves and flourishes with. Loaded with antioxidants (studies have found more antioxidants in unripe bananas than overripe ones), Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Silicon, zinc, Potassium, lots of anti-inflammatory agents and hydrating oils, banana peel is being praised as a cheaper, quicker and less invasive alternative to botox injections. I’ve been eating a banana every morning and then rubbing the peel to my face and neck…and the result is quite astonishing! I can definitely see and feel that it has improved elasticity along my neck and locked in moisture on my face and neck, my skin is less dehydrated than it was. My skin tone seems to be more even and more firm, some of my more ‘obvious’ wrinkles are diminishing somewhat but there is a welcomed reduction in fine lines around my eyes. Now when I put on make-up, my overall look is revitalised and brighter, perhaps due to the high amounts of Vitamin C in the peel. Would I recommend that you try it daily? Does a bear s**t in the woods? Of course, it’s completely natural so the skin absorbs it completely. You could also smack on some of the banana pulp, it gently exfoliates and banishes tired and dead skin cells. 10/10 from me.

Are you a big Winnie the Pooh fan? Winnie is a firm favourite in our house and while all of the other remnants of childhood have been given away or stored away, you will still find a few Winnie teddies, towels and photo frames in prime positions around the house. Pooh bear loves honey, perhaps that’s why Winnie is the epitome of everlasting youth and we could all do with adding some more raw honey to our diets and using it on our skin. Ancient Egyptians used honey as a nutrient for the skin, I think we are all familiar with the stories about Cleopatra bathing in it. Archaeologists believe that it was used mainly because of its antibacterial properties but nutrient-enriched honey proved to be laden full of antioxidants too – the end result was flawless skin. Cleopatra also regularly had oatmeal baths proving that beauty recipes are ever so accessible to the modern woman. Raw honey is packed with components beneficial for your skin, especially if you have acne or autoimmune conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Even Candida overgrowth can be controlled by applying honey to your skin. In its natural form, honey is produced by enzyme activity, plant matter and live bacteria coming together to create a powerful ingredient, especially valuable for cosmetic uses. It can clear acne, heal scars and even out skin tone and local, raw, unpasteurised honey has the most potential for topical application on the skin. So make sure that the honey that you use is unpasteurised as in order to benefit your skin, it needs to have the healthy bacteria intact. Some recommend mixing honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon, this is a powerful antioxidant. Leave it on your face for eight to 10 mins and rinse off completely with warm water. If you feel that your skin is tired or dull, mix a little purified water with honey and apply to the face and neck. Leave it on for at least 15 mins and wash off, the purified water makes it easier to spread and also to remove after. Because honey is completely natural, it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.

Life is all about accepting what you can’t control and focusing on what you can control. Ageing is a natural part of living, we should embrace it, all the while using what nature provides to look and feel as good as we possibly can. Don’t feel bad if you can’t afford whatever the latest promise of everlasting youth is, just remember that there was a time when doctors told people that it was safe to smoke, asbestos passed all safety regulations and Bayer laboratory produced heroin cough syrup in 1898 – and this was much sought after! The cough syrup was discontinued in 1910 when it was discovered that it didn’t cure the cough but rather, made people so ‘chilled out’ that they didn’t care if they were sick or not! Do your own research, use what is natural.

Stop giving out about how you look! Yes, I’m talking to you. Negative self-talk produces physiological stress in the body, rapidly elevating levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Prolonged elevated levels cause illness, this has been scientifically substantiated but ARE YOU LISTENING? The more you criticise how you look, because the brain takes everything literally, the more parts of your body the brain will find for you to complain about. It really is very simple, train yourself to take note of what you love about yourself and the more that you do that, the more things you will find to love. If you have tried in vain to lose weight, how about you focus on your posture and how you hold your head? It’s a simple trick to lose five pounds! Be realistic, your instagram algorithm might be continually tempting you with the latest ‘pull your belly in and lift your ass’ but it’s all just an illusion and what is pulled in and lifted up has to go somewhere else. I, for one, have seen all too many women fall ‘sucky in’ things and then end up looking like a prop forward, all bulk at the top and no neck!

Smile as much as you can, it’s free, it’s contagious and believe it or not, the more you smile, the younger you will look. Smiling exercises anywhere from five to 53 muscles in the face, the bigger the smile, the more muscles contracting and the result is an improvement in circulation, improving elasticity and reducing those natural grooves that come with age. Because this is the summer of 2023 and the summer of dresses, there is no better accessory to a flowing summer dress than a wonderful smile. It is the best accessory that you will ever add to any outfit, in fact. A recent study revealed that out of a group of 10 women dressed for an evening event, all wearing black, all of similar height and weight, five smiled and five posed without a smile, only one woman out of the five that didn’t smile received votes in the ‘Best Evening Look’. I think that it’s safe to say that a big smile will ‘woo’ any audience!

Sustainable shopping is now, more than ever before, a responsibility that we all need to embrace. We need to rethink how we shop, why we need more, when we have enough and how to reduce the chances of making ridiculous purchases. Style lovers are now becoming more humanitarian, asking ‘who is making these clothes’ and need reassurance that they are ethically produced… in other words we want guilt-free clothing. Long story short, ethical clothing makes sure that it positively impacts people, the planet and animals. There is the reassurance that workers are treated fairly across the supply chain, this includes all policies and practises on child labour. Worker safety, the right to join a union and payment of a living wage is guaranteed. An ethical brand is passionate about reducing carbon emissions and safely eliminating or disposing of any chemical waste.

Unfortunately, not every clothes shopper can afford to replace their entire wardrobe with solely ethical pieces. Please don’t fret if this describes you and don’t underestimate the part that you can play in reducing fast fashion. We all have to start somewhere and today is as good a time as any to start. Pre-loved is very much a step in the right direction, it reduces waste and brings a big smile to more than one face. You would be simply blown away by what is out there now for the Irish style lover, whether you are looking for something for your big day or a designer piece that would otherwise be well outside of your budget.

Undoubtedly, we are all feeling the pinch, as it seems like we are getting less and less ‘bang for a buck’ but what about the feeling of contentment when you can buy an item of clothing and know that the money goes on to help someone who genuinely needs your help. And there will always be that section of society who refuse to walk into a ‘charity shop’. All that I can say is that I lived in Manhattan, New York for many years and the treasures and designer bits that I found in what they call ‘Thrift Stores’ would keep your jaw very firmly planted on the floor!

Have you heard about Barnardos Bridal Rooms? Yes, I’m referring to Barnardos, the Children’s Charity. Two shops, one located in Wexford, the other in Dun Laoghaire stock brand new bridal gowns and wedding accessories that have been donated by some of Ireland’s top bridal retailers, wholesalers and designers. These incredible bridal gowns retail at greatly reduced prices and the bride-to-be can magically pick up a stunning new gown at a fraction of the standard retail cost. Proceeds from the gowns and accessories go to Barnardos children’s charity and help to support our most vulnerable children. Imagine knowing that your ‘big day’ played a part in helping to improve the life of a child. That’s what I call feel good, now that’s a win-win – knowing that your hard earned cash could change a life for the better.

Having worked in the style business for many years, I know, only too well, how clothes can make or break how you feel. As a result, don’t ever allow anyone to tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t like something, just because… I’m referring to designer clothes. If you love designer clothes and have the budget to follow suit, go for it, spoil yourself! Forty years ago, the very wise Teresa Collins opened Naphisa Designer Resale in Cork. Teresa has built up a solid customer base over the years, those who buy new designer clothes and then sell them on to Naphisa and customers who couldn’t normally afford new designer pieces will gratefully buy these glorious pieces at a fraction of the original cost. It operates as a consignment store. You could say that Teresa with her brainchild Naphisa were well before their time but this wonderful business has always been thriving and is now busier than ever.

Naphisa stocks pre-loved designer clothes from Brown Thomas, Samuii and Olori… I am exceptionally sweet on the last two and all that I can say is that they are heaven-sent! Obviously the usual Prada, Chanel, Gucci etc are available here too and many other brands but many of you might not have known that you could find a stunning Annie Bing or a Lis Lareida piece – sophisticated style ready and waiting for you. So if you are tired of some of your designer pieces or bags, then call in to Naphisa.

I met with the lovely Robert Plant in Designer Exchange Ltd on Exchequer St, Arnotts Dublin 2. Run off their feet, Robert’s only complaint was that they would love to stock more designer clothes and accessories for men. At the moment, whatever comes in for guys is re-bought on the same day. Robert explained that men buy new designer clothes and wear them until they fall apart, that’s why there is such a problem getting his hands on re-sale bits. Women are completely different, they continue to want new bits and are willing to let go of older pieces…especially as these consignment stores offer a way to fund what’s currently on sale. This is another busy shop, making sure that what’s not being worn in your wardrobe finds a new love again. Designer Exchange is now 10-years-old and during that time has won awards for excellence and innovation.

Believe it or not the current trend is ‘less is more’ and pre-loved is admired and sought after more than ever before. How about we continue to embrace this mindset.
How is it almost Christmas again already? I genuinely feel that this year, someone put extra-strength Duracell batteries into the ‘Time’ machine because it is whizzing by. One thing for sure, I’m not going to get into that manic Christmas stress and pressure. I adore this time of year. Christmas looks good, smells good and feels fantastic. There will be an empty seat at our table; my daughter won’t be coming home for Christmas for the first time in her life. Oh but please don’t feel sorry for her, she will be experiencing everything that California has to offer for Christmas, minus me pulling her out of bed early on Christmas morning. We will all really feel her absence, especially the way she instigates all of the Christmas games and, to be completely honest, she makes a mean Jameson, 7Up and lime cocktail with blueberries. It’s such a huge transition when your kids grow and no longer wake you at an unearthly hour to open their presents on Christmas morning. I’ve been paying it back for the last few years by waking my three up early. The response is always wonderful – lying through my teeth here. They do get up but conversation is normally minimal until massive tankards of coffee have been guzzled down. Oftentimes the lads can’t remember where they have hidden their presents for us so there is lots of running up and down the stairs, last minute wrapping, doors banging and ‘oh sorry, that wasn’t meant for you’ after you open something. I wouldn’t change any of this, not for a second. I feel truly blessed and there is no greater gift in life than to see your children happy and healthy and following their dreams.

So what is happening in the world of Christmas style? It’s very simple, anything that sparkles or twinkles – wear it. Get those WOW pieces out of your wardrobe…If there is a sequin or gold thread in it, it’s a seasonal winner. These pieces do not need to be expensive, cheap and cheerful gets a free pass here so no pressure allowed. A plain black dress can be instantly turned into a Christmas party dress by adding a sparkly belt or glitter heels. The black tights and gold sandals combo is a bit like marmite but I’m definitely a fan. It does look really chic if you have the confidence to wear them together. Quite a few of you have been asking what kind of footwear you should wear with wide leg trousers. A pointed sock boot or a block heel boot are a great addition to a wide leg trouser; make sure that the trousers are literally grazing the floor, to visually lengthen the legs. An almond shaped toe or pointed toe on a boot or sling-back shoe will also add even more length to your look, especially if they are the same colour as your trousers! Platform trainers are a cool alternative day wear look with the same wide trousers that can carry you from day into partying the night away. They are a great way of dressing down smart trousers.

In early November, Marks and Spencers introduced a red narrow trouser and red jacket for sale as ‘separates’ but together they created the most gorgeous and flattering red suit. Not for the fainthearted and it certainly didn’t break the bank…needless to say I couldn’t resist it. The trousers come in four lengths, so depending on how much or little of your ankle you want to show off, your perfect length will be there. The trousers have an elasticated waist and are so comfy. The red blazer will carry you through the entire year, dress it down with jeans or leggings or ‘sex it up’ with a slinky little dress underneath. The trousers too will also carry you right through every season, providing a splash of colour to lift your spirits, even on the darkest of days.

Velvet is luxurious and comfortable, what a wonderful combination! Most of you are afraid to wear it even if you love the look. I love it, this glorious material can be dressed up (obviously) but you can also dress it down for everyday wear. I got married in New York at Christmastime and wore a velvet dress, a dress that I would still wear today. Yesterday I wore a lilac velvet jacket with jeans while going shopping. It’s all about getting more comfortable, dressing down clothes that can be perceived as ‘more formal’. Let that be your motto when you go shopping. If you are buying something formal for an event over the holidays, ask yourself ‘How can I dress this down?’ Every single item that we buy now needs to be used and reused multiple times. It is no longer acceptable to leave clothes hanging in your wardrobe for months or years on end! The ultra relaxed look is to add sneakers to any outfit and it instantly pulls it back to daywear.

So what kind of gifts do you buy for someone when we all have everything? What about a weighted eye pillow/mask. These eye masks are incredible – I have a faux fur one. They help to destress and ease tension around the eyes and forehead and have a weighted-bead insert infused with lavender that you can toss in the microwave or freezer for different thermo-therapy benefits. A good quality thermo-therapy weighted mask costs about €50.

Do you have a Fashionista on your Christmas list? I know it might sound bizarre that I would recommend a really good pair of oversized sunglasses but they are something that we all need and use all of the time. This season, the bigger the better, and the more glamorous. A super gift if the person doesn’t need a prescription in them.

Whether they love to travel or perhaps you need to buy a student a gift, a leather backpack is the ultimate ‘in’ and sophisticated practical pressie this year that anyone and everyone will love to carry on their back.

Skip gifting traditional jewellery pieces and opt for an anklet instead. I’m not suggesting that you spend €150 on a Missoma anklet, spotted on a lot of A-list celebrities, but there are lots of price options out there and whoever
receives one will never want to take it off.

You might think it a tad strange that I am recommending a salt lamp as a stylist Christmas gift but think they are wonderful; they’re calming and provide a lovely glow instead of the harsh light from a lamp. They definitely purify the air, lift your mood, enhance your sleep and improve breathing conditions.

Don’t forget to treat yourself – even if money is dreadfully tight, find a way. I have a gift for you and it comes at minimal cost. I have come across so many women who lost a dramatic amount of hair after having Covid. For some, it actually fell out in clumps. I couldn’t believe it myself; a month after being sick, every time I washed my hair, so much fell out. A good friend gave me a really old tip that works so very well. I was researching extensions to add thickness (in case it continued to fall out in dramatic levels) and looking for recommendations from hairstylists. These were not cheap options, so I was sitting on the fence and then my friend suggested that I try a rosemary rinse, as I had a rosemary plant in my garden. Years ago, women would make tea out of a rosemary plant, drink some of it and let the rest cool to be used as a rinse after washing hair. It is supposed to boost hair growth by inhibiting hormonal changes that can lead to hair loss, improving circulation to the follicles, acting as an antioxidant and decreasing inflammation on the scalp. I decided to give it a go. After using it a second time, I could feel the difference in the texture of my hair and now, six weeks later, I have loads of new hair growth. I have been making a conscious effort to drink fresh rosemary tea at least every other day, so that I am getting the benefits inside and out. I cannot recommend this enough and I make enough rinse to last two weeks so I always have some in supply. This is my Christmas gift to you.

Have yourselves a wonderful Christmas and if you are feeling bad inside, find someone who is struggling and help them, it will lift both of you. Make some time to spend with others. Hug everyone and hold each other for the longest time. If you lost someone close during the year, be still and know that they are still with you. To my friends, you are the treasures in life that I hold so dear to me and, to my family, here’s to loads of games and laughing and PJ days and lots of precious time together or on video calls to San Diego. I know that there will be tears but there will be so much love and that transcends even the greatest distance.

“The best Christmas gift is to realise what you already have.”

Most of us are still holding on to our sun-kissed skin…How lucky are we? Lots of moisturising and hydrating and heading into October, those tan lines are still very obvious. It’s a bit like suddenly discovering that there is a bar extension when you thought you couldn’t buy another drink, isn’t it? Those warm sunny days have warmed our hearts and our minds, gradually nudging us towards shorter days and less light, easier-to-stomach when we have had an abundance of sunshine. The cooler days, especially the evenings, are calling out for fleece socks… ever-so-gently. A week can make a dramatic difference in what you can wear, especially as this is ‘season changing’ time so it really is time to get ready for some added heat…in clothes form.

Leather jackets have come into our stores in a delectable assortment but so many get this look so wrong! There, I’ve said it. There are a few golden rules when it comes to wearing a leather jacket. While they have been around for over a century, worn initially by pilots for warmth, now they add a touch of style and heat to your wardrobe but you must get the ‘look’ right. Cheap Faux leather may look similar to real leather but it lacks many of the features that make real leather such high-quality material, mainly it is not as warm (if at all) and not comfortable. There are so many types of real leather, some are softer than others so choose whichever you prefer and non-plastic, non-animal leather is also a wonderful option…the quality is remarkable and the price might be a tad higher but the feel-good factor is phenomenal, I can vouch for that! You can search for and choose between silicone-based leather, plant-based leather and lab-grown leather.

The leather jacket that has outsold all styles is the ‘biker’ jacket. It seems to be the length that suits most body shapes, individual preference dictates how much or how little detail is in tow.

Leather jackets are incredibly versatile so never feel the need to limit its use. Where people go very wrong is if they wear the wrong style of leather jacket with a more formal outfit or wear a formal/classic cut leather jacket with a casual outfit… ‘fuddy duddy’ is the word that springs to mind so be mindful of that, it is not a ‘one style jacket suits all occasions’! There is a good chance that you have more leather items in your wardrobe than you realise. If you do, it’s best to match your leathers for a more flattering look and if you are not sure about how they look together, go with your gut. A sleek leather dress with matching leather boots is a win but if you top it off with a leather jacket you have transitioned into ‘leather over-kill’ so opt for a fluffy jacket or something completely different.

Adding the right accessories that enhance your leather jacket is key to a chic look. If your biker jacket is on show then your accessories (sunglasses, hats, scarves, watches, bags) need to blend with it, not overtake it. Choose unobtrusive accessories to finish the look. On the other hand, if you are wearing a short blazer style leather or a collarless leather jacket, you can accessorise more dramatically.

How many of you take care of your leather? Leather jackets and bags and boots age really well, developing that much loved well-loved worn look over time. You do need to maintain it to let it reach this point. Spot clean any dirty areas and regular conditioning is a must. A damp cloth in a little soapy water will remove any first and grease and blot rather than rub the leather. It is imperative that you dry the leather quickly so make sure that you air it for as long as necessary. Dry cleaning a leather jacket is not the ideal way to clean it and the process should only be resorted to when heavily soiled because it removes the natural oils and the jacket can end up looking dehydrated and not as soft as before. Any stains or smells on the lining can be treated with a dilute baking soda mix (just a teaspoon in a little warm water) and air to dry completely. Mould can build up on leather so easily if dirt builds up on it so make sure to gently wipe down with a damp cloth at the start and end of a season. I hang my jackets to air dry from a velux window opened a fraction, it’s a win-win, as the jackets get light and air and they are protected from rain or sun fade too.

Professionals recommend that you ‘condition’ your leather pieces once a year. Look for a lanolin-based leather care product. Lanolin is a natural waxy secretion, which comes from sheep and it will make your jacket, bag or boots lovely and soft. Never ever store leather in plastic, it needs to breathe. The last thing you want is to find your favourite pieces covered in mould! Unless you have bought top quality leather, also known as Full Grain Leather, leather or the finish or sealant on other grades of leather can peel if not stored properly. Cleaning with leather cleaners that contain solvents, or using a shoe or boot leather conditioner on a jacket or bag can also cause peeling. Believe it or not baby wipes can cause peeling too, even the ‘sensitive’ ones – says a lot doesn’t it?

The dreaded ‘squeaking’ leather jacket can happen, even if it is top quality but the best solution is to just wear it around the house for a day or so and the ‘wearing in’ process will get rid of the squeaks!

Some manufacturers finish their leather products using cheap, unfiltered fish oil, which breaks down over time and releases an unpleasant fish smell. This is really difficult to treat and get rid off so if you get a whiff at all, even the tiniest hint of fish, then do NOT buy it. If Covid has robbed you of your sharp sense of smell, bring a friend along to test it out too before you buy.

For those of you who don’t like leather, have never owned a leather jacket, nor will you ever buy one, then my apologies if you found this article rather tedious but I’m sure you wear leather shoes or boots or have leather bags or a leather purse.

I’m going to leave with two things to think about… and you just have to giggle at one of them because if you don’t , then maybe you haven’t lived at all!

‘No one will take care of your belongings like you do. They don’t know the lengths you took to purchase the things you own.’

‘How ironic is Life? We spend so much money on expensive clothes, but the best moments in life are spent without clothes…’

Love it or hate it, this time of the year comes with a slew of fashion brands trying to outbid each other when it comes to offering shoppers the best discounts and deals. As a result of so many people shopping online, we no longer have the heaving crowds in shops and the endless wait to get into the fitting rooms. The first thing that you need to remember when heading out is that you are most definitely up against some of the best marketing minds in the fashion business; they know how to hook you and reel you in. It’s amazing how many women in particular say, ‘Look how much I saved on all of these clothes!’ when in fact they forget to take into account how much they have spent. The god honest truth is that our brains zone out when we see 50 per cent or 70 per cent off. The idea of not paying full price for something can cause frenzied thinking so here are a few do’s and don’ts that might help you to choose more wisely.

Create a ‘wish list’ in the notes on your phone at a time when you feel realistically comfortable in your own skin and well rested. When we are tired, emotionally drained or having a ‘feeling fat day’ our thinking is distracted. We have a tendency to make more mistakes and want to impulse buy everything, thinking that this will make us feel better.

Start by writing down the amount of money that you have to spend or are willing to spend on the ‘sales’. It will ground you.

Look through what you have more than once and start with bits that need replacing, this will most often be any item in white. Then look at what you might need to match up with something that you already have.

If you have a fair idea that you will be invited to a wedding the following summer, keep an eye out for something incredible but try to avoid the statement colours that we were smothered in this season as they will be very much ‘last season’ by next summer.

Finally, and my favourite part of the list is taking screenshots of items that I would like to buy or try on and decide if they are ‘me’. Sometimes when I see something that I like on someone I ask them if I can take a photo; most people are really flattered and you can add that on to your wish list too.

Now you can go shopping with a plan and when your pupils dilate and the adrenaline kicks in the moment you see your favourite fashion brand discounted, stay calm. Ask yourself ‘Do I need it?’ or believe it or not ‘Do I really like it?’ Bottom line, stick to what you know (your signature style), stick to your budget and keep referring to your list.

When we are confronted with the noise of big name brands and their big discounts, it can be all too easy to forget that both independent and second-hand brands also offer discounted deals at the end of the season. Check out your local boutiques and gift shops, you just might find something wonderful.

We all know that clothing sizes can be a bit of a minefield and it’s not unusual for someone to be two sizes different from one brand to the next, some clothes look better over-sized and others fitted. Boutique sizes are often more generous than high street stores, in other words, don’t let it ruffle your feathers if you have to choose a bigger size.

Just because an item of clothing comes in a colour and shade that really suits you but the fit isn’t great, please don’t adopt the ‘it will do’ attitude. If I have seen one ‘it will do’ item with the tags still on in wardrobes, then I have seen a thousand.

Make sure that you know the Returns Policy when you purchase something that you have a little uncertainty about. Trying it on in the comfort of your own home, in front of your mirror, will ultimately help you to decide between keeping or returning. The clearance section is another matter completely, if you buy, you keep.

The number one sale buy this season has to be the summer dress. Get over yourself if you are about to start whining about your legs and just get a spray tan or practise putting on tan at home until you get it right.

Next comes summer sandals, runners and bags. Shop to your heart’s content here, especially when it comes to comfortable footwear, you can never have too many pairs of runners and you can wear them with absolutely everything!

In case you need reminding, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to look really good. Looking good involves far more than spending money to fit someone else’s idea of beauty. A genuine warm smile will make you look so much more attractive than no expression at all or a constant startled look with caterpillar eyebrows! Be yourself always, let it go right over your head if someone judges you because of how you look or don’t look and zip that internal voice that probably gives you a harder time than anyone else. I’ve always loved the quote ‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind’.

‘Life’s like ice cream. Enjoy it before it melts’ – Em Clarkson.

There are so many ways to describe what being a woman is all about. For some, womanhood is strength, for others it’s tenderness. It might also be pushing yourself in your career, at school, or helping to make other women feel better about themselves. You can be a woman wearing a dress and heels or in a pair of work boots or wellies. Womanhood is not defined by jobs, body parts or relationships – it’s not defined by anything or anyone but yourself. We need to celebrate all the ways to be a woman, especially celebrating those who have learned what that means in their own way. I’m talking about the women who are taking power over their stories, and speaking their truths rather than allowing society to tell them what and who they should be and how they should look.

We have been tirelessly conditioned to believe that weight gain is synonymous with failure and that to succumb to the aging process – or to age gracefully – is letting go or giving up. Supposed normal thinking has us obsessed with youth, being slim, pucker-free with zero body hair. Does this sound like anything to you? Stop up and think about it? Isn’t it comparable to the perfectly created Barbie doll or Cindy (My generation!)? I’ve been involved in the Image Industry for a very long time and I still think that so-called ‘normal thinking’ is more than just creepy, it is not attainable. I’m sure that the algorithm on your social media apps knows you very intimately now so if you ever clicked on one weight loss site, you are still seeing adverts for every weight loss package out there. It’s all shrink it, conceal it, plump it, anti-aging this, fat-free that – where do I start? Where do I stop? This is the standard against which most of us compare ourselves now. No one mentions the pain, the heartbreak, the embarrassment, the ‘not-fitting-in’, the pressure, the lack of finances, the trying and failing that is involved in that desperate hunt to fit into these societal standards.

There is nothing but misery to be gained if you pursue youth and beauty according to what our magazines print and what our TVs fill our minds with. Be authentic, be real but most importantly, be yourself.

Move every day, not just because you might lose some weight, but because it will make you feel better. Follow ‘realistic’ influencers and what I mean by this is if you are 50, follow style influencers that are close enough to your age. You will find yourself feeling less frustrated or soul-destroyed. Embrace aging, dump clothes that no longer fit and find new ones that make you feel like you, not a ridiculous image that you have created in your head. One day you will look at yourself in the mirror and wonder why you wasted so much of your life worrying about losing inches, covering grey hair and depriving yourself of chocolate or cheese or happiness.

Dresses are the ultimate in summer attire, they are easy, feminine, one item, an instant feel good so buy as many as your heart desires. They should be flirty, chic and bold colours that scream life. Cut-out dresses took centre stage on the runways for this summer and are simply gorgeous on the ‘younger ones’. The look is cut out and midi length, sophisticated with an edge!

You will find plenty of vintage-inspired dresses or ‘frocks’ as they were once called, with slinky halter dresses, swirled prints and pieces with bedazzled elements that will shine in the summer sun. Fun floral prints are very much on trend for summer 2022 and they are the kind of dresses that you can wear without having to think about them too much. The floral print also means that you keep accessories to a minimum. Revamping your wardrobe to incorporate the best summer dresses is arguably one of the most exciting parts of warm weather dressing and there is no better time to start clearing some hangers for pieces you’ll wear on repeat in the coming weeks and months. Maxi dresses for summer are what boots are for winter…non-negotiable and a no-brainer. It’s all about being versatile, no matter what the neckline, you can tie a belt around it, throw on a denim jacket or a vest over it, wear it with flats or wedges or platform sandals. It certainly isn’t a problem if the length is too long, there is simply nothing like a floor-kissing-hem to add a wow factor. The clever shopper will be able to carry some of their floral print dresses right through the winter with tights and boots…always a winning combination when you get such value for money out of a dress.

Shirt Dresses are still really big with so many variations available. Some are ruched, some poplin, smock-ed or t-shirt style, whichever you choose, it’s an effortless casual look. When it comes to a seasonal stand-out, how about a puff sleeve dress? – A real winner for the wedding guest of 2022, especially in an off-the-shoulder look.

The itty bitty hemlines are causing quite a stir and there is no more agreeable time to wear a mini than in summer. You can wear them everywhere, from brunch to bbq’s to a romantic dinner or a weekend away with the girls. The secret to wearing a shorter-than-usual dress is to make sure that you are comfortable. If you find yourself pulling at it as soon as you put it on, then take it off rather than allowing it to upset your entire day or evening feeling self conscious. Some can brave it, others leave mini dresses in the beach wear pile. Find your comfort zone!

Whatever you choose to adorn your body with this summer, wear it lovingly. No one will ever judge you as harshly as you judge yourself. Be your own style guru, take chances, be adventurous and be bold. It’s perfectly okay to assess your wardrobe and decide that you do not need a thing. Mindless buying just for the sake of it is silly so be really conscious about what you like, what you actually wear and what you are drawn to keep buying… but never wear.

Keep that ice-cream quote in your head always…go on, get out and keep living, after all life is melting away!
