When I was first asked for Shilajit, it seemed like a wellness fad – and a slightly suspicious one at that. It wasn’t until we were asked repeatedly that we decided to look into where it comes from and what it does. We cautiously brought some in, and then started getting interesting feedback, which prompted us to explore it further.

We’ve now been stocking Shilajit for two years, and it’s become one of our most popular products. Here are a few of the things people suggest it’s good for. I wouldn’t believe all the claims made online – but equally, we’ve seen no negative side effects and have had some very positive feedback.

Most recently, Petra Florence, the brilliant osteopath who works above Organico, recommended it to my teenage son for energy – and he’s doing very well on it, which encouraged me to look a little deeper into the benefits.

Shilajit comes originally from Ayurveda. When Rachel and her husband Keith were in India on a health mission, it was given to them by their Ayurvedic therapist.

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Shilajit is often referred to as ‘the destroyer of weakness’ and has been used for centuries as a tonic for energy, resilience, and longevity.

Shilajit is a natural, resin-like substance that forms over hundreds of years in mountainous regions, most commonly the Himalayas. It develops through the slow breakdown of plant matter, compressed and transformed by microorganisms and environmental conditions into a dense, mineral-rich compound. In its raw form, it appears as a dark, sticky substance that seeps from rocks during warmer temperatures.

What makes it unique is that it’s not a herb, nor a single nutrient – it’s a complex matrix of compounds, including fulvic acid, humic substances and trace minerals (often 80-plus in small amounts).

This complexity is part of both its appeal and the challenge in studying it. Much of the interest in shilajit centres on fulvic acid, a naturally-occurring compound formed during the breakdown of organic matter.

Fulvic acid is thought to support nutrient absorption, act as an antioxidant and help transport minerals into cells. These properties are often used to explain shilajit’s traditional use as a rejuvenating tonic. However, most of the evidence we have comes from laboratory or small-scale studies, so its effects in the human body are still not fully understood.

In Ayurvedic practice, shilajit is classified as a ‘rasayana’ – a substance used to support vitality, energy, and overall resilience. Traditionally, it has been used for: fatigue and low energy; cognitive support; fertility and hormonal balance; recovery and longevity.

Modern research has begun to explore some of these areas. There is early evidence suggesting that shilajit may support energy production and reduce fatigue; have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects; contribute to cognitive health; and support testosterone levels in men.

However, it’s important to be clear: most studies are small, and the evidence is still emerging rather than conclusive.

From a natural health perspective, the appeal of shilajit is quite different to typical supplements. Rather than isolating one nutrient (like magnesium or vitamin C), it offers a broad-spectrum, naturally occurring combination of minerals and bioactive compounds.

This aligns with a more holistic view of nutrition – that our bodies often respond better to complex, naturally balanced substances than to isolated compounds.

Many people describe it as supporting more stable, sustained energy, improved resilience to stress and general vitality rather than a quick ‘boost’.

One of the most important considerations with shilajit is purity. In its raw form, it can contain contaminants such as heavy metals, microbes, and environmental toxins. For this reason, it must be properly purified.

At Organico, we’ve chosen to stock Kiki Shilajit resin, as we trust them as a company and know their product is pure. We also carry a couple of Ayurvedic Shilajits in capsule form, and a Shilajit gummy from Known – which can be a more accessible option for teenagers or anyone who struggles with taste or texture.

If you’d like more information on Shilajit, call in to us in Organico and have a chat! Or if you are not local to us, drop us an email on online at organico.ie and we will do our best to advise you.

I know it can be a divisive vegetable, but I have to say I love beetroot. I love it in salads – cooked or raw – and I love it roasted. And I especially love that the whole plant is not just edible but tasty – the leaves are delicious cooked like spinach – in fact in some cultures the leaves are prized more than the roots.

Beetroots are so vibrant, and have so many health benefits – too many to cover! I’m only going to manage to summarise the most researched ones here.

While beetroot has been celebrated in kitchens for centuries, recent nutrition research helps explain exactly ‘why’ this humble vegetable is such a superfood.

Adding beetroots in your diet, or taking a daily shot of beetroot juice, can have significant health benefits and can in some cases reduce the need for medication. I used a website I like called NutritonFacts.org for the research mentioned below, in case you want to check out the references.

One of the best-studied health benefits of beetroot comes from its high nitrate content. Unlike the nitrates you find in sausages and other processed foods, the nitrates in beetroot are converted in the body into nitric oxide – a molecule that relaxes and widens blood vessels, improves blood flow and helps to lower blood pressure. Even if that was the end of their health benefits, beetroots should win a Nobel Health Prize!

Beetroot’s heart-friendly properties are mirrored in its shape and colour – particularly when cooked, it looks just like a human heart – in case we needed a visual reminder of its benefits.

In terms of high blood pressure, there are clinical studies that show that drinking beetroot juice or consuming nitrate-rich beetroots can significantly reduce systolic blood pressure, with effects that begin within hours of consumption and last throughout the day. And of course with no side effects, just side benefits!

The same nitrates that help support healthy blood pressure also help with exercise efficiency and performance.

Research reviewed on NutritionFacts.org highlights that nitrate consumption can improve the efficiency with which the body uses oxygen during exercise. This means muscles can work harder or longer with the same amount of oxygen, which can translate into better endurance and performance, especially in endurance sports such as cycling or running.

Some studies reported that cyclists who consumed beetroot juice required less oxygen to compete at a high intensity compared to those who didn’t – a measure of improved aerobic efficiency.

Beetroot isn’t just a pretty veg – the deep dark red colour comes from betalains, a class of phytonutrients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds help combat oxidative stress – the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body, which is linked to many forms of chronic disease.

Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are implicated in heart disease, cancer, and metabolic disorders. While dietary antioxidants don’t cure disease, eating antioxidant-rich foods like beetroot contributes to our body’s ability to neutralise free radicals and support healthy cellular function.

Beyond the heart and muscles, improved circulation matters to the brain too. Some emerging research suggests that better blood flow – facilitated by nitric oxide from dietary nitrates – may help maintain cognitive function as we age, and even reduce the progression of dementia.

One of the more curious phenomena associated with beet consumption is beeturia – when urine (or sometimes stool) takes on a pink or reddish colour. It’s nothing to be worried about though – it’s just the colourful beetroot making its way out of your system.

In addition to nitrates and betalains, beetroot brings a range of important micronutrients to the table. It’s a source of vitamins like folate (important for cell growth and cardiovascular health), minerals such as potassium (which supports nerve and muscle function), and dietary fibre, which is beneficial for digestive health.

If you have an inflammatory bowel condition, adding beetroot to your diet could be very helpful. Maybe start with the juice and if that is tolerated well, see how you do with cooked beetroot.

Beetroot’s earthy sweetness makes it a wonderful ingredient in salads, smoothies, soups, roasted vegetable dishes, and juices. Many people find beetroot even tastier when combined with orange juice or ginger.

We have some fantastic Irish beetroot products. The West Cork based Cultured Food Company offers a fermented beetroot kvass with ginger and a jar of sliced fermented beetroot, while Feighery’s Farm produces an Irish-grown beetroot juice mixed with apple juice – both delicious ways to enjoy beetroot. In Organico, we also stock locally made sliced and pickled beetroot, a selection of organic juices, and beetroot and raw broccoli sprout shots from NHNH.

For those who want the health benefits without eating a whole beetroot daily, a small daily juice shot works well. Alternatively, Nature’s Plus Organic Beetroot Powder can be added to smoothies or drinks. Capsules are also an option for convenience. But whatever happens we should all eat the beets!

This isn’t medical advice – please do your research thoroughly and consult a medical professional if you are on medication or have a serious health concern.

As I’m writing this it’s a sparkling day outside, the sunshine is streaming in the window and it really feels like 2026 is off to a good start. Down here in Glengarriff we had a gorgeously dry, crispy Christmas – the photos I have from the Christmas Day Swim at Snave, my local swim spot, look like they were taken in the Caribbean. The quality of the light is out of this world. Hopefully this bodes well for a year of good weather, and lots of sunny swims.

For this column, I’ve decided to look at a supplement called NAC. NAC is short for N-Acetyl Cysteine, a form of the amino acid cysteine. It’s not a new supplement – in fact, it’s been used in clinical settings for decades – but it’s getting renewed attention as interest grows in gentle, evidence-based ways to support detoxification, lung health, recovery after illness, and overall resilience.

NAC has many benefits, but the one that prompted me to write about it this month is its role in liver support and detoxification. After Christmas indulgence -– richer food, a few more glasses of wine than usual – and for many of us, one or two viral infections that may have meant more paracetamol than normal, NAC can be a very useful support. It works by helping the liver restore its natural balance after periods of increased demand.

One of the key reasons NAC is so well regarded is its relationship with glutathione, often described as the body’s ‘master antioxidant’. Glutathione plays a central role in detoxification, particularly in the liver, but levels can become depleted during times of stress, illness, alcohol intake, or regular medication use. NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, meaning it helps the body make more of it when it’s needed most.

In fact, NAC is used in hospitals as the standard treatment for paracetamol overdose, because of its ability to protect liver tissue from damage. That tells us two important things: first, that it’s extremely effective at supporting liver detoxification, and second, that it’s very well understood from a safety perspective. At home, NAC can be helpful if you’ve had a winter where paracetamol featured more heavily than usual and you’d like to gently support your liver as things settle back down.

Another area where NAC really shines is recovery after viral infections. Many people notice that even once the acute phase of a virus has passed, they’re left with lingering fatigue, brain fog, or a sense that their system just isn’t quite back to baseline. By supporting glutathione production and reducing oxidative stress, NAC may help the body complete that final phase of recovery.

Closely related to this is NAC’s long-established role in lung health. NAC has a mucolytic effect, meaning it helps thin and loosen mucus in the airways. This can be particularly useful if you’ve been left with a persistent cough, wheeze, or chest congestion after a winter virus. It’s often used by people with chronic bronchitis or asthma, but many find it helpful on a short-term basis after respiratory infections to help clear the lungs more effectively.

Less commonly talked about, but increasingly interesting, is NAC’s potential role in mood and mental wellbeing. Research suggests that oxidative stress and inflammation may play a role in low mood, anxiety and brain fog. By supporting antioxidant pathways and glutathione levels in the brain, NAC may help support emotional resilience and mental clarity, particularly during periods of stress, hormonal change, or post-viral fatigue. It’s not a replacement for other supports, but many people report feeling clearer and more balanced when taking it.

Interestingly, NAC can also be supportive if you enjoy the occasional glass of wine but don’t always wake up feeling great the next day. Alcohol places an extra burden on the liver, and taking NAC before bed (rather than the following morning) may help the liver process alcohol more efficiently overnight. This isn’t about cancelling out alcohol – nothing really does that – but about supporting the body’s own detox systems so they can do their job properly.

NAC was very popular during Covid, and more recently one of our colleagues found it very helpful for a chronic lung condition. But it was Gwen Bastian-Enright, an excellent nutritional therapist who works here in our Organico Therapy Rooms, who brought it to my attention just before Christmas. She mentioned how helpful she finds taking a capsule after a glass of wine, and how many women notice changes in their wine tolerance during menopause. That was what motivated me to take NAC home over Christmas – and I was very glad I did. Not only did I take it after a few glasses of wine and wake up feeling great, but I also picked up a gastro bug and needed paracetamol to get through it, so I’ve nearly finished the bottle!

In terms of how to take NAC, it’s often used in short courses rather than continuously. A common approach is to take it for two to four weeks after a period of stress, illness, or indulgence, and then take a break. I’m going to have some on hand for emergencies!

Typical doses range from 600mg to 1200mg per day, depending on the individual and the reason for taking it. As always, if you’re on medication or have a medical condition, it’s worth checking with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.

To sum up, NAC isn’t a flashy new trend – it’s an impressive supplement with a strong evidence base. Whether you’re looking to support your liver after Christmas, recover fully from a winter virus, support lung health, improve resilience during stressful periods, or gently support healthy ageing, it’s well worth considering.

NAC is available from most good health food stores, but if you can’t find it locally, we have it here in Bantry and also online at www.organico.ie.

Every year around this time, I look around at the growing piles of ‘stuff’ in our house and quietly vow not to add to anyone else’s. Most of us don’t need another novelty mug or something that ends up at the back of a cupboard. What people do appreciate are gifts they can enjoy and use – things that nourish, comfort, or bring a small moment of pleasure during what can be a stressful and hectic time.

Choosing simple, natural gifts from local businesses keeps your money circulating in your own community, supporting real jobs and real craftspeople. That feels far more meaningful than adding another product to the endless December rush. So here are some thoughtful, healthy ideas that won’t clutter up anyone’s home – but will absolutely make their day.

Time to read

I love both getting and giving books over Christmas, so I’m really excited that Bantry Bookshop has received a makeover recently and is bursting with new stock. I like that you can pass a book on, and particularly over Christmas, I’m planning to make lots of time to read.

Edible (and drinkable) treats

A personalised hamper: A hamper from your local health food shop or deli is a gorgeous gift – and a wonderful way to support Irish producers. A lovely idea someone requested recently is a breakfast hamper with: Red Strand Coffee, roasted locally; a bag of Organico granola (or your own homemade version!); a loaf of Organico sourdough; a pack of good breakfast tea; a pot of Folain jam or marmalade; and a delicious Organic orange juice.

If you don’t have time to put one together, we’ve a selection of ready-made hampers featuring tea, chocolate, and West Cork products. And to reduce packaging, you can gift the hamper in an Organico Jute Bag that will last for years.

Homemade goodies: There’s something very personal about giving something you’ve made yourself. A cake, some truffles, festive granola or spiced nuts – they’re all thoughtful, enjoyable gifts that disappear in the best possible way. Personally, I love the Irish tradition of gifting a Christmas Cake – it reflects the importance of preparing and anticipating the joy of the holiday season. I also love making marmalade (much easier than making a cake – and still makes a lovely gift that the right person will enjoy for weeks afterwards).

Chocolate and reduced-sugar gifts:Chocolate is always a winner, especially when it’s made locally. We love new Irish brand Van Velze truffles for a proper treat, and Mella’s Fudge from West Cork is always a hit – buttery, rich and handmade.

For lighter treats, the Cosmic Dealer nut butter squares are beautiful – rich and satisfying without lots of added sugar. Their gift box is especially lovely.

Non-alcoholic tasty drinks: There’s no shortage of delicious non-alcoholic options these days – craft kombuchas, Gimber, sparkling elderflower, and soon the first Irish Aronia Juice grown just up the road. Mixed with sparkling water, it makes a refreshing, nutritious festive drink.

Irish wine: It’s always a talking point that Ireland makes wine, but the Viking Wines really are a pleasure – and make a brilliant gift for anyone who enjoys trying something a bit different. We love the Pet Nat, which is a gentle sparkling Red that you serve chilled at the start of a meal.

Natural skincare and
everyday bodycare

Giving the gift of luxury skincare is such a treat – we can give each other things we might not buy for ourselves.

WaSi in Bantry makes gorgeous soaps and a seaweed-infused body oil scented with Ylang Ylang.

Naturally Balanced in Kinsale create exquisite body oils – my favourite is their ‘Restore’ blend with Neroli, Frankincense and Lavender.

A bath self-care pack: Instead of one item, why not make a small set to encourage someone to take a quiet moment for themselves? All you need is: a naturally scented candle; some mineral-rich (and deliciously scented) bath salts or bath oil; and a calming herbal tea (and maybe a little sweet treat to go with it!).

A rich hand cream: If you need a small but dependable present, a hand cream is one of my favourites – especially in winter. The Kinvara hand cream is particularly nourishing and fits into any budget.

Gifts for calm and reflection

A Moon Calendar makes a beautiful annual gift for anyone who likes following the natural rhythms of the year. Pair it with a Moon Mná Diary or Wellness Guru Journal, and you’ve got a simple, grounding gift that supports reflection and resets for the year ahead.

Irish crafts
(not made in China)

We also have a wonderful craft shop just up the road from us in Bantry – and they have an online shop if you don’t live near here. They stock all manner of fabulous cups, jewellery and of course Birkenstocks! I love knowing that everything in there has been personally selected.

And finally – plants

If you know someone who loves gardening, you can’t go wrong with a living gift, and close to us here is the absolutely amazing Future Forests, which is another family business, and they also have an online shop.

At the end of the day, to me, some of the best gifts are the ones that get used and enjoyed. Natural, local gifts avoid excess packaging and clutter while supporting the varied small Irish businesses that keep our communities vibrant.

December 8 – Christmas Shopping Day

If you’re around Bantry on Monday, December 8, we have 10 per cent off nearly everything for the day. Only here in Bantry though, not online. See you then!

We’re open 9am-6pm, with our Deli serving coffee, cakes, and lunch from 9am-4pm. If you can’t visit in person, our online shop is shipping across all 32 counties at www.organico.ie.

Twenty years ago, when Rachel and I took over managing Organico, supplements were simple. Most of us just took a basic multivitamin and maybe a spoonful of cod liver oil, and that was it (unless we had a cold when we took tons of Echinacea!). The shelves weren’t crowded, and the goal was just covering the basics. Our first question to anyone asking about family health was usually, “Are you all taking a good multi?”

Fast forward to today, and the supplement world has exploded. Complex formulas promise everything from sharper focus to boundless energy and it can feel overwhelming to know what to choose. Many of us have cupboards full of supplements we bought but can no longer remember why they seemed important.

However, I have realised recently that despite all the hype, the fundamentals of good nutrition haven’t changed. So this month, I’m exploring why a good-quality multivitamin and mineral remains the foundation of solid nutritional support for all of us – especially now, when both our food and environment are putting extra demands on our bodies. There’s a lot of solid research backing this up (I’ve included some references below if you want to read more!).

And in particular, if you or someone you know is taking one of the new weight-loss medications – which can reduce appetite or interfere with nutrient absorption – it’s even more important to make sure you are getting all the micronutrients you need.

Fruits and vegetables aren’t as nutrient-rich as they once were, and the change is actually really dramatic. Reviews show a noticeable drop in both vitamins and minerals over the past 60 years. Essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron have declined in UK produce since the 1930s (Davis et al., 2004).

Why? Modern farming, depleted soils, long storage, transport, and processing all reduce nutrient content. Even rising carbon dioxide levels – a sign of climate change – can lower minerals like zinc and iron in staple crops.

So even if you’re eating a colourful, whole-food diet, you might not be getting the same nutrients your grandparents did. Eating well is essential, but it doesn’t always guarantee we’re fully nourished.

On top of food quality, we’re exposed to more chemicals in our environment than previous generations: heavy metals, microplastics, pesticides, phthalates, PFAS – all present in food, water, and air. Studies link exposure to these pollutants with higher risks of diabetes, high blood pressure, developmental issues, and immune problems.

This stress increases the need for certain nutrients, particularly those involved in detox, antioxidant protection, and immune support – like zinc, selenium, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. A broad-spectrum multivitamin is a practical way to give your body the extra support it needs.

One reason I take a multivitamin daily is because of some fascinating research on brain health – especially important given my family history. A study comparing a daily multivitamin to a placebo found that people taking a multi had better memory and overall cognitive function. Researchers said it was like turning back the clock on brain ageing by about two years.

We all know that chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, and immune issues are on the rise. While lifestyle, diet, genetics, and environment all play a role, one thing we can control is getting enough essential nutrients. Vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, and B-vitamins are crucial for energy, immunity, hormone balance, and cell repair. I like to think of a multivitamin as a safety net – it fills gaps in the diet, helping us stay energetic, resilient, and less prone to getting run down.

If you’re using weight-loss medications, there’s an added reason to prioritise nutrients. GLP‑1 agonists, for example, reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying, which can lower intake of iron, magnesium, potassium, choline, and vitamin D. Lipase inhibitors reduce fat absorption, affecting fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta-carotene – all vital for immunity, skin, vision, and bone health.

In these cases, diet alone may not be enough. Eating nutrient-dense foods is essential, but a carefully chosen multivitamin or targeted supplement acts as a safety net, helping fill gaps caused by reduced intake or absorption. Combined with movement, hydration, and stress management, it helps keep you nourished, resilient, and energetic while managing weight.

A high-quality multi remains one of the simplest ways to support health for a number of reasons: Even with a healthy diet, it’s easy to miss a few nutrients. A multivitamin plugs those holes; Stress, pollution, medications, and busy lives all increase what your body needs; Topping up nutrients helps your body stay resilient and recover faster.

Choose broad-spectrum formulas with absorbable forms – methylated B-vitamins, magnesium citrate, zinc picolinate, natural vitamin E – and avoid fillers. Not all multis are created equal. Cheap supermarket brands often contain synthetic nutrients and fillers – not because they help, but because they make production easier. They can also contain so little of any given nutrient that they are practically worthless.

Clean, additive-free brands like Viridian or Terranova focus on what really matters: nutrients your body can absorb, with nothing unnecessary. Viridian sums it up: “all our listed ingredients are formulated to provide a health benefit – nothing else is added.” Choosing a cleaner formula tops up nutrients while cutting out unnecessary additives.

Supplements aren’t magic. A colourful nutrient-dense diet, good sleep, daily movement, and stress management are still the foundation of health. Stick to reputable brands, check labels, and consult a practitioner if you take medications or have health conditions. More isn’t always better – the goal is balanced, optimal intake.

For my family, even with all the organic food we eat, modern life makes it clear that diet alone isn’t always enough. That’s why we make sure everyone takes a high-quality multivitamin daily. It’s not the only supplement we use – my drawer is proof! – but it’s clear to me that a good multivitamin is one of the most important ones.

This month we have a wonderful offer from Viridian – they have given us a number of FREE High 5 Multis to give away. If you come in and say you’ve read this article we’ll give you a free month’s supply! It’s a great way of testing how you feel and if it suits you. Be quick though – we only have a certain number to give away!

When most people hear the words ‘men’s skincare’, they understandably think of the basics – shaving cream, deodorant, maybe a splash of aftershave. But the truth is, men can have far more complex skincare needs, and these are often overlooked.

Thankfully over the last number of years we have become far more comfortable talking about women’s intimate hygiene. But this conversation has barely begun for men.

We have metres and metres of skin formulas aimed at women on our shelves in Organico, but only a handful of men’s grooming products. But forget about male intimate care.

Too often, men feel embarrassed, avoid seeking the right advice, or simply ignore persistent skin issues – which can make problems much worse in the long run. It’s time to change that. Men deserve serious, smart skincare that’s as natural and effective as possible.

So when a new Irish startup called Dr Macks approached us with their range of natural, effective men’s hygiene products, we immediately thought: ‘yes, absolutely – this is a conversation worth starting’.

So here’s one of the more unusual topics this column has covered – men’s groin hygiene! Read on if this is of interest – if not, see you next month!

Men’s skin isn’t identical to women’s. It tends to be thicker, oilier, and subject to different stressors like shaving, friction, and sweating. Add in today’s challenging lifestyles – long working days involving sitting or driving, intense exercise, synthetic clothing – and it’s clear that a quick splash of water or a harsh bar of soap won’t always cut it.

Using products that aren’t suited to the needs of delicate skin can cause real discomfort: itching, chafing, irritation, dryness, even lingering odour. Yet for years the conversation around men’s skincare has been reduced to shaving foams and aftershaves, leaving many men without the tools they need to properly care for their skin.

This is where Dr Macks is changing the narrative. Dr Macks was founded with a simple but important mission: to give men – both younger and older – the knowledge and products they need for optimal hygiene, specifically groin hygiene. The brand was created by Dr Karnie Roden-McMahon, a retired family physician with a passion for dermatology and men’s health.

Throughout her career, she noticed how many men were hesitant or embarrassed to seek help for common groin skin conditions, and how often friends, partners, and even family members approached her for advice. This inspired her to turn her expertise into a wider mission: to remove the stigma around discussing groin hygiene and to promote clean, healthy habits for men everywhere.

Dr Macks Cleaner

At the heart of the range is the Dr Macks Cleaner, a pH-balanced wash developed by doctors and dermatologically tested. It’s designed for everyday use and – crucially – it’s safe for the delicate groin zone, as well as the rest of the body. This matters because a lot of conventional shower gels or soaps are too alkaline, which can upset the natural balance of the skin and cause irritation.

If friction or sweat build-up strips the acid mantle of the skin and allows a rash to develop, this can be very hard to get rid of and can in some cases lead to more serious issues. So prevention is key.

For men who’ve struggled with irritation or who want to upgrade from basic soaps, the Dr Macks Cleaner offers freshness without the harshness. There’s a choice of scents, something to suit everyone.

When she called down to launch the range in Organic recently, Karnie said she uses the cleaner on her face every day, as it’s so gentle.

Dr Macks Perfecting Balm

The second hero in the line is the Dr Macks Perfecting Balm. If the Cleaner is about daily freshness, the Balm is about targeted care and comfort. Think of it as a smart solution for areas that get irritated, rubbed, or simply need a bit of extra TLC.

Formulated with 80 per cent natural or naturally-derived ingredients, the Balm includes shea butter to soften, allantoin to calm, and zinc to fight odour and reduce inflammation.

Karnie said a lot of her customers are using the Balm to protect their skin from chafing during long bike rides or when working outside in warm weather, and it can also be used to help calm skin irritation anywhere on the body.

We really like the simplicity of the Dr Macks range. A shelf full of bottles and multiple steps is off-putting. What Dr Macks has done brilliantly is keep it simple: a wash to keep you clean, and a balm to keep you comfortable.

This two-step approach doesn’t require learning a new routine or setting aside extra time – it simply integrates into the daily shower and dressing ritual. It’s skincare that feels natural, straightforward, and useful.

We often talk about men’s health in terms of big lifestyle choices: diet, exercise, heart health. All of those are vital – but skin health deserves a place in the conversation too. Skin is the body’s largest organ, our first line of defence, and a major part of how we present ourselves to the world.

It’s time we dropped the embarrassment and broadened the conversation about men’s intimate care. And we particularly like Dr Macks website because it contains some very clear, detailed sections on common intimate skin issues which can be used as a reference if needed.

We are listing Dr Macks products both in-store here in Bantry and online at www.organico.ie.

I love simple, traditional herbal home remedies – cider vinegar for stomach ache, carrageen drinks for soothing children’s coughs and ginger tea for nausea are some of my favourites. But over the last few years I’ve become very curious about the multitude of health benefits offered by cayenne pepper.

Cayenne (Capsicum frutescens) is best known for its spicy kick in curries and soups, and you’d expect to find it in the spices section of your local Healthfood Shop – but it’s also been a staple in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. It’s a traditional healer, a metabolic pick-me-up, and, as you will discover below, it has an almost unbelievable number of health benefits.

A friend of mine who is also a Medical Herbalist calls cayenne “a life saver”, even giving some cayenne tincture to her elderly mother who was having a stroke, to help keep her conscious as they waited for the ambulance.

She wrote an article about cayenne saying Cayenne…is a remarkable and cheap remedy for many ailments. It helps to regulate blood pressure, stems bleeding and stimulates the circulation in a gentle, but very effective way. It also (surprisingly) aids digestion and can help to heal stomach ulcers.

Warming and pain-relieving:

If you suffer from cold feet, this is something to try. Sprinkle cayenne powder in your socks (yes, really!) – it’s an old folk remedy for warming the toes. Just be gentle and don’t overdo it, or the reports are you’ll have very very warm feet!

Modern herbalists still turn to cayenne as a circulatory stimulant. It’s one of the stars in Dr Clare’s Joint Cream, where it’s used externally for stiff or aching joints. The warming properties help stimulate blood flow to the surface and may ease discomfort from sore muscles and arthritic twinges.

Capsaicin is also a pretty potent pain reliever. When you apply it topically to your skin, capsaicin can help with pain by reducing the amount of a chemical messenger known as substance P, which travels to your brain to signal discomfort. With less substance P, you feel less pain.

Psoriasis relief: Another counterintuitive application for Capsaicin involves offering relief for psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that makes your skin itchy, scaly, and covered with red patches. While there is currently no cure, WebMd says topical capsaicin creams can help reduce itching and improve skin inflammation related to psoriasis.

Digestive support: Cayenne can be brilliant for digestion. It stimulates digestive juices and helps your body absorb nutrients more efficiently.

WedMd says: It might seem ironic because you probably associate spicy foods with heartburn. But the capsaicin in cayenne pepper actually stimulates the nerves in your stomach that produce digestive fluids, which helps your digestion. Research shows it may even help prevent the most common type of stomach ulcers, which are caused by the H. pylori bacteria.

I’ve also seen references to using Cayenne to help manage Fatty Liver disease, but you’d need to consult a medical herbalist for a protocol in those cases.

Colds and flus: One of my favourite winter flu remedies is hot lemon, honey, apple cider vinegar and a pinch of cayenne – this can be fantastic when you’re feeling under the weather and also makes an excellent soothing tonic for sore throats.

If you’re in Bantry sometime, pop in and try our Cold Buster in the Deli – a hot drink that we make using organic lemon juice, ginger, turmeric, rosemary, carrageen and cayenne – it’s a favourite for those days when you feel like you’re coming down with something, and it’s also delicious!

Weight loss and metabolism support: Capsaicin gently raises your body’s temperature, nudging your metabolism into action. It may also help curb appetite, making it a great addition to a healthy weight-loss routine. A little sprinkle in meals, a good-quality cayenne capsule, or a drink like the one above could be something to consider if you’d like to boost your metabolism.

First aid: Cayenne can even be used topically for minor cuts (to stop bleeding) and for shock or faintness. I’ve seen reports of people packing it onto wounds, though it’s a bit of a scary thought (I’ve not tried that myself yet!)

How to use it: Adding cayenne to your diet is easy and delicious. Here are a few ideas: Sprinkle over soups, stews, or roasted veg; Mix into hummus or salad dressings; Brew into a warming cayenne tea with lemon and ginger.

If you’d like to try some Cayenne at home, you can find Cayenne Powder in your local Healthfood Shop – always buy organic!

You can also make a cayenne tincture at home by soaking the powder in vodka for two weeks – great for circulation and as a warming tonic.

Or if you prefer not to taste the heat, cayenne supplements offer a way to benefit from capsaicin without the burn. And Cayenne also comes in topical forms for use in joint pain.

I’ve always been passionate about water – I love watching it, swimming in it, and I even completed my MA Thesis on the sociological effects of water privatisation around the globe. Who owns water rights is a huge issue – in many places, if you control the source of water you basically have all the power.

I’m also very interested in the relationship between improving hydration and healing chronic illness. I believe that most of us are actually chronically dehydrated, and that many illnesses can be eased by working out how to hydrate our bodies at a deep level.

I think at this point, we all know we ‘should’ drink more water – but it’s not always happening. Some people find it really hard to make themselves drink the amount they know they need. And sometimes, even if we drink two litres in a day, we still feel thirsty, sluggish, or foggy. That’s because true hydration isn’t just about the quantity of water you’re consuming.

It turns out you can drink plenty of water and still be dehydrated if that water isn’t actually being absorbed into your cells. So this month I’m going to take a look at making the water we drink more valuable by adding in key nutrients that help our body ‘actually’ use the water we drink.

First things first: what’s the difference between hydrating and just drinking water?

Imagine pouring water on dry soil. Sometimes it soaks in… but sometimes it just runs off the top. That’s exactly what happens in your body. If you drink a big glass of plain water – especially if it’s filtered or distilled – and it lacks the necessary minerals, it may just flush through your system without really hydrating you.

Hydration, on the other hand, is cellular. It’s when water actually penetrates into your cells and tissues, helping them function, detoxify, and regenerate. True hydration is about water getting in – not just passing through. To get inside the cells, water sometimes needs some assistance from minerals like sodium, potassium and magnesium – also known as electrolytes.

When you’re sweating, exercising, breastfeeding, working in a hot kitchen, or even just stressed, you lose electrolytes, not just water. Hence your sweat tastes salty!

Electrolytes are tiny, electrically charged minerals that your body needs for hydration, energy, nerve function and muscle health, and drinking large amounts of water without paying attention to electrolytes can upset the balance of minerals in your body.

One simple way of making your drinking water more hydrating is to add electrolytes. You can make a DIY electrolyte mix using a good quality salt and some lime or lemon juice (see the recipe below) or you can buy a pre-made mix, or you can combine them both for the ultimate hydration drink.

There are many different forms of pre-made electrolytes available, but they often contain a lot of sugar or artificial sweeteners, so my preferred option is the ‘Electrolyte Fix Drops’ from Viridian.

‘Electrolyte Fix Drops’ contain all the electrolytes necessary for hydration in an ionic form, as well as all other minerals naturally present in sea water. Ionic refers to the mineral being ionically charged (attached to a negatively charged mineral complex). If the electrolytes are present in an ionic form it’s very helpful for effective hydration, including: Magnesium, for energy and muscle relaxation; Potassium, for heart rhythm and fluid balance; Sodium, to help absorption and nerve signals; Chloride, another key hydration mineral.

Along with a host of other trace minerals, and zero sugars. A bottle lasts ages, and it’s a brilliant daily support, especially if you don’t eat a ton of fruit and veg or if you’ve cut back on salt.

Another possible addition to your water is iodine – a trace mineral that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. It’s essential for your thyroid, which regulates your metabolism, energy, temperature, and even your mood.

In Ireland and the UK, we’ve seen a quiet return of mild iodine deficiency, especially in women of childbearing age, teens, and people who avoid dairy or seafood. Symptoms can include fatigue, foggy brain, cold hands and feet, or hormonal ups and downs.

To be confident you aren’t Iodine deficient, you can add a couple of iodine drops to your water once a day. It’s simple, inexpensive, and a gentle way to support your thyroid and energy levels – but do make sure not to overdo it. Iodine is powerful stuff, and more is ‘not’ always better.

Lime and salt
hydration drink

Makes 1 large glass (about 500ml)

Ingredients:

• Juice of half a fresh lime

• A pinch of good quality sea salt (Celtic or Himalayan – about one-eighth tsp)

• 2.5 ml of Viridian Electrolyte Fix

• Optional: 1 drop of iodine

• A full glass of sparkling or spring water

Method:

Squeeze the lime into your glass. Add the salt and stir until dissolved. Add your electrolyte drops and iodine (if using). Fill up with cold water and enjoy!

“Pimping up your water” isn’t just another wellness trend – it’s a genuinely practical way to help your body get more from what you drink. A few drops of electrolytes, a splash of iodine, and a touch of salt or lime can make all the difference between just drinking water and actually hydrating.

Give it a go for a few weeks and see how you feel – since I started adding electrolytes to my water every morning I feel more clearer-headed, more energised, and more hydrated.

And if you want help getting started or figuring out the best options for you, pop into Organico – we’ve got everything you need to make your daily water that much more effective.

I’ll admit it – I got a Covid puppy! Like so many others, the lifestyle changes of those months meant our family was suddenly in a position to welcome a pet we might have otherwise thought we were too busy for. Enter Milo, our lively Irish Water Spaniel, who bounded into our lives in April 2020. And honestly? We’re all the better for it.

Since his arrival, my daily routine has completely changed. I now walk every single day, sometimes for up to an hour – something I never would have done before. And because Milo is such an important part of our family, keeping him healthy has become a real priority for me. Seeing so many dogs develop autoimmune conditions or require surgery, I’ve become passionate about supporting his health in the most natural way possible.

One of our biggest wake up calls came when Milo was about three. We went on holiday, and he had to stay in a kennel, which meant a round of vaccinations and medications. A few months later, he started itching like crazy and developed what we initially thought was conjunctivitis. When we took him to the vet, we were surprised to learn that his eye issue wasn’t an infection – it was likely a reaction to something in his diet. And guess what the most common allergen for dogs is? Chicken! We cut chicken out (which, by the way, is in almost every commercial dog food), and his eyes cleared up completely. Every so often I test the theory but even the smallest bit of roast chicken skin gives him gooey eyes again.

Figuring out what to feed him has been a journey. I was drawn to raw feeding over ultra-processed kibble, so we experimented with different raw diets until we found what suited him – and us. Now, he thrives on a mostly raw diet with one meal a day and a little cold-pressed kibble as a top-up. His digestion has improved, and his energy levels are through the roof.

But even after the diet change, the itching persisted. We used drops from the vet, which helped, but I started to question the sheer amount of medication our pets are given. Vaccines, tick treatments, mite drops, kennel cough meds – it all adds up, not just in their bodies but in the environment too. When your dog is running around peeing in nature (in our case, the stunning Glengarriff Nature Reserve), it makes you think twice about what’s in their system.

That’s when I started looking for natural alternatives, and I was very happy to discover The Natural Vet Company, a new Cork-based family business making herbal pet care products developed by a vet. We recently launched their range in Organico, and Sinead, the founder, came to train our team. A qualified Veterinary Herbalist, combined with over a decade of experience as a veterinary surgeon across Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, Sinead has used her expertise to create effective, natural remedies for pets.

Her range supports a variety of pet health issues, from skin conditions to anxiety, arthritis, digestive troubles, and more. One standout for me is her Green Lipped Mussel supplement for joint care. Sinead discovered that vets in Australia rely on Green Lipped Mussel instead of pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories. Not all Green Lipped Mussel extracts are created equal, though – some are gritty and ineffective, while others (like hers) are soft, pure, and packed with benefits. It’s actually human-grade – which for me really sums up Sinead’s commitment to quality.

Another incredible product is ‘Calm,’ a natural remedy for pets who struggle with stress. Whether your pet is restless, reactive, or just a bit stubborn in training, this gentle formula helps soothe without the need for heavier medications. Before reaching for pharmaceuticals, this is definitely worth a try.

For Milo, Sinead’s Skin & Coat supplement has been a game-changer. It’s a powerful mix of essential fatty acids, amino acids, and herbal support designed to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthy coat. If your dog struggles with recurring skin issues or ear infections, this could be a great daily addition. Since starting it, Milo’s itching has reduced dramatically, his skin is less dry and flaky, and – bonus – his ears no longer smell!

Because Irish Water Spaniels are prone to joint issues, I also give him the Joint Care supplement occasionally. With ingredients like Hemp Oil, Green Lipped Mussel, Ashwagandha, and Devil’s Claw, it’s an excellent natural option for supporting mobility as he gets older.

If you’re interested in exploring natural pet care, The Natural Vet Company’s range is now available at Organico. It’s exciting to see more holistic options for our four-legged family members, and I love knowing that I’m supporting Milo’s health in a way that’s both effective and kind to the environment.

Have you tried natural remedies for your pet? I’d love to hear your experiences!

We’re venturing back into holding small events up over the Deli, and the first is a Face Yoga Pamper morning with Irene Dunne and in collaboration with Trilogy, happening Saturday April 12. Tickets are very limited, but keep your eyes peeled as we are planning to hold more events like this in the coming months.

This month, I’ve gone deep into the world of salt — its history, where we source it, how it has shaped civilisations, and, of course, which are the best salts to use in our kitchen!

Salt has influenced human civilisation for thousands of years, shaping trade, economies, and even wars. Ancient cultures – from the Egyptians to the Romans – relied on it for preserving food and enhancing flavour. It was once so valuable that Roman soldiers were paid in ‘salarium’ (the root of the word ‘salary’). Salt routes and monopolies fuelled empires, and at times, access to salt determined the fate of nations. From medieval salt taxes to Gandhi’s Salt March, this humble mineral has played a surprisingly powerful role in history.

Salt is everywhere – it’s found in seawater, underground deposits, and salt flats. Oceans hold the largest supply, with about 35 grams of dissolved salt per litre. Underground salt deposits, formed from ancient evaporated seas, are mined in places like the US, Canada, China, and Germany. Salt flats – like Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni and Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats – form when saltwater lakes evaporate, leaving behind vast crusts of salt. Even Mars has traces of salt, hinting at the presence of ancient water!

Salt has seasoned our language as much as our food. Ever heard the phrase “not worth his salt”? It dates back to ancient Rome when soldiers were sometimes paid in salt. “The salt of the earth” (from the Bible) describes someone honest and reliable. “Take it with a grain of salt” suggests skepticism – possibly from the idea that a little salt makes something easier to swallow. Across cultures, salt has flavoured not just meals, but the way we speak.

We all know that too much salt can be harmful, but sodium is still an essential mineral. The key is choosing the right kind of salt and consuming it in moderation, and being aware of all the ‘hidden salts’ in our foods.

If you’re trying to be mindful of your salt intake, the main foods to keep an eye on are ultra-processed foods, which can contain shockingly high levels of refined salt.

High-Sodium Foods include bread – supermarket sliced bread, baguettes, crispbreads; processed meats – salami, bacon, ham, sausages; salty snacks – crisps, French fries, crackers, salted nuts; and cheese – brie, cheddar, mozzarella; soups – tinned, frozen or powdered.

While salt is essential for bodily functions, most people consume far more than they need. The recommended daily intake for adults is around 5g (one teaspoon IN TOTAL), yet processed foods can easily push us beyond this limit.

Signs of excessive salt intake include: Frequent thirst and dehydration; swollen hands, feet, or face (water retention); high blood pressure, which can lead to long-term cardiovascular issues; headaches and a feeling of sluggishness after salty meals.

One simple way to monitor your intake is by checking food labels – salt content is often listed as ‘sodium’, and 1g of sodium equals about 2.5g of salt. Cooking from scratch and opting for fresh, unprocessed foods can really help keep your levels in check.

I once saw a documentary about a shop in Japan which sold over 300 different types of salt That seems a little excessive, but I do like to have a variety of salts in my kitchen (and some others in my bathroom!)

In Organico, like many Healthfood Shops, you’ll find a wide range of different salts (though you won’t usually find table salt, as we don’t rate it either for flavour or health)

We stock: Regular Sea Salt (coarse and fine); Celtic salt/French seasalt/grey salt; pink Himalayan salt; herbal salt (we love Herbamare by A.Vogel); Irish salts – like Atlantic Salt from the Beara, Achill Island salt; flavoured salts – smoked, seaweed salt; Maldon salt (flakey, great for finishing dishes).

Not all salts are created equal however! While they all share sodium chloride as their base, their sources, mineral content, and processing methods vary greatly:

Table salt: The most common, highly refined salt. It’s stripped of minerals and often contains additives like anti-caking agents and iodine. It’s the type of salt most commonly found in ultra processed foods and is often responsible for contributing too much salt in our diet.

Sea salt: Harvested from evaporated seawater, sea salt retains trace minerals like magnesium and calcium, which contribute to its flavour and potential health benefits. The texture and taste vary depending on the source, with options ranging from fine to coarse grains.

Celtic salt: A specific type of sea salt from the coastal regions of France, Celtic salt is unrefined, naturally grey in colour, and retains moisture. It’s packed with over 80 trace minerals, making it a great choice for those looking to boost electrolyte balance.

Himalayan salt: Mined from ancient sea beds in the Himalayas, this pink-hued salt is rich in minerals like iron, potassium, and magnesium. It’s less processed than table salt.

Each type of salt has its place, and choosing the right one depends on your dietary goals, taste preferences, and cooking needs.

Sea salt is best for everyday cooking (I prefer the French grey salt) and Himalayan salt offer great flavour while providing trace minerals. Use fine sea salt for general cooking and baking, and coarser salts (or a flakey salt like Maldon on Irish Atlantic Salt) for seasoning dishes just before serving.

Celtic/French Sea Salt is a good choice for those seeking a mineral-rich, unrefined option.

For fermentation and curing, coarse sea salt, French Salt or Himalayan salt all work well, as they don’t contain additives that might interfere with fermentation.

Ultimately, moderation is key—choosing a quality salt is important, but reducing processed foods is even more effective in managing sodium intake.

Salt also has many therapeutic uses ranging from helping with conditions like asthma, COPD, and inflammation through salt caves and halotherapy to increasing magnesium levels and easing muscle tension (Epsom Salts). My personal favourite are salt float tanks. Filled with high levels of magnesium salts, they allow you to float effortlessly, helping to relax the nervous system. I love visiting the Zero Gravity float tanks in Cork.

Adding sea salt to your bath can help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, as well as soothe sore muscles after a workout – I use coarse Celtic salt for this – and gargling salt water or using a saline rinse can be great for sinus health and soothing a sore throat.

Salt is so much more than just a kitchen staple so whether you’re enjoying a salt float, using a salt scrub, or simply sprinkling the right kind of salt on your food, it’s worth taking some time to appreciate this humble yet essential mineral.

If you want to stock up on salt, come and visit! We’re open in Bantry from 9am-6 pm, Monday to Saturday, with our Deli serving coffee and lunch from 9am-4 pm. If you can’t visit in person, our online shop is shipping across all 32 counties at www.organico.ie.

This January, I’m focusing on breathing — why it’s vital to breathe correctly, the damage poor breathing does to our bodies and minds, and how to build healthier habits.

You might think, ‘Breathing? Isn’t that automatic?’ In some ways, you’re right — we take about 25,000 breaths daily, both day and night, without a second thought. But are we doing it right? And could we do it better? Unfortunately, many of us have developed poor breathing habits that contribute to a surprisingly large range of health problems.

I have to say, I think this is one of the most important topics I’ve ever explored. My interest in the importance of breathing was reignited this Christmas when I read ‘Breathe’ by James Nestor. Cover to cover, it fascinated me. I knew it had to be the first topic I tackled in 2025.

Nestor’s book is both informative and engaging — a true page-turner. It chronicles his journey to becoming a “pulmonaut”, as he consults breathing experts worldwide, tests techniques, and uncovers the science behind the art of breathing. What makes the book so compelling is its blend of facts, personal stories, and ancient wisdom. The subtitle, ‘The Science of a Lost Art’, perfectly captures this mix, showing how much we’ve forgotten about proper breathing and the life-changing benefits of reviving it.

Nestor shares modern experiments conducted by scientists and even participates in some himself, proving how poor breathing habits harm our health. From ancient practices to cutting-edge research, he reveals how something as simple as breathing better can profoundly impact our lives.

For years, I’ve been curious about breathing. Yoga and meditation have shown me how breathwork calms and focuses the mind, but this book opened my eyes to how improper breathing impacts our overall health — and how we can fix it.

When my daughter was young and experienced viral asthma, we discovered the Buteyko method, a Russian breathing technique (taught locally here in West Cork) which has remarkable benefits for asthma sufferers. Although she was too young to fully practice it, we picked up tips that helped, like clearing a blocked nose effectively. I still use some Buteyko habits myself, such as taping my mouth at night, which improves my sleep and prevents dry mouth. I also use a Buteyko method to reduce my breathing if I wake during the night — it works wonders.

Later, when the asthma subsided, we visited an orthodontist in Cork who stressed the importance of nasal breathing for children. Mouth breathing, he explained, disrupts dental development and overall health. Dentists worldwide are recognising the connection between poor oral health and improper breathing, and also the impact that mouth breathing (and eating too much soft food that doesn’t need chewing) can have on how our faces develop.

James Nestor’s ‘Breathe’ is the most comprehensive book I’ve found on this subject. It offers insights for everyone — from young people building good habits to those struggling with issues like sleep apnea. It also covers reducing snoring, improving sleep, enhancing athletic performance, and reducing chronic inflammation.

Here are some key points from the book:

Shut your mouth: Around half of us are chronic mouth breathers, a habit that irritates the lungs, increases respiratory infections, and depletes moisture in the body. Mouth breathing is also linked to bad breath, sleep apnea, and other health issues. In contrast, nasal breathing filters, warms, and humidifies air, encouraging fuller, slower, and deeper breaths. You can also look into taping your mouth at night – I use paper tape bought in most good pharmacies.

Breathing affects your body and mind: Nestor highlights how our breathing influences everything from heart rate to stress levels. Slow, deep breathing and techniques like pranayama (yogic breathing exercises) can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve focus and relaxation. Better breathing habits can have an immediate and lasting impact on both physical and mental health.

The dangers of chronic over-breathing: One of the book’s revelations is the concept of ‘chronic over-breathing’. Modern lifestyles have led many of us to breathe too much air, disrupting the balance of gases in our bodies. Over-breathing lowers carbon dioxide levels, which impairs oxygen delivery to cells and leads to fatigue, headaches, and poor performance.

Chewing for better breathing: Our ancestors ate tougher, chewier foods, which strengthened their jaws and improved breathing. By incorporating more chewing — whether through harder foods or even gum — we can improve our jaw structure and overall health. James took up a regime of chewing more and he strengthened the bones in his face significantly, which is a remarkable feat.

The perfect breath: Nestor shares what researchers consider the ‘perfect breath’: 5.5-second inhales and 5.5-second exhales, equating to about 5.5 breaths per minute. This rhythm maximises oxygen and carbon dioxide balance, improving health and performance. I’ve started using an app called ‘Paced Breathing’ to practice this, and it’s been very interesting. He also draws attention to how easy it is to unconsciously hold your breath while working online/dealing with emails – it’s even got it’s own term, Email Apnea! This resonated with me, and I’m consciously trying to practice the ‘Perfect Breath’ while working on my laptop. It’s not easy but the stress caused by unconscious breath-holding isn’t good for us, so it’s worth trying to change that habit.

If you’re intrigued, I highly recommend ‘Breathe’ by James Nestor. We have a few copies for sale in Organico (in-store only), but you’ll also find it in bookstores or your local library.

For those dealing with asthma, sleep apnea, or snoring, I suggest exploring the Buteyko method. There are many practitioners across the country offering personalised courses to help with these issues — without relying on medications or intrusive machines. You’ll find someone in your area if you search online.

Wishing you a happy and healthy January from all of us at Organico. We’re here to support you and your family to stay healthy and well this year. Come and visit!

We’re open 9 am–6 pm, with our Deli serving coffee, cakes, and lunch from 9 am–4 pm. If you can’t visit in person, our online shop is shipping across all 32 counties at www.organico.ie.

At Organico, we’re always on the lookout for exceptional products that align with our mission of promoting health, sustainability, and delicious, nutritious food. That’s why we’re thrilled to feature the ‘Mush Mór’ range of mushroom powders – transforming the way health enthusiasts and food lovers alike experience mushrooms!

Crafted in the heart of County Monaghan, Mush Mór combines extraordinary health benefits with rich, natural flavours, making it easy to incorporate nutritious mushrooms into your daily routine. Let’s explore what makes these powders so unique.

Unlike many mushroom products on the market, Mush Mór takes a culinary-first approach. While mushroom capsules and tinctures are common, Mush Mór’s powders are designed to blend seamlessly into meals, hot drinks, and recipes. Their range is perfect for anyone who values the benefits of natural, wholesome food without sacrificing taste.

Mush Mór believes that food should not only nourish the body but also delight the senses – and we couldn’t agree more. With their innovative blends, they’re changing the way we think about health foods.

Founded by Seán D. McKenna, an environmental sustainability expert, Mush Mór emerged from his research into bio-materials. Discovering the versatility of mushrooms, as both sustainable materials and superfoods, inspired Seán to create the brand. His dedication to innovation and passion for health and the environment have shaped Mush Mór into a forward-thinking Irish brand committed to both the planet and your well-being.

We’re excited to offer three incredible mushroom powders from Mush Mór, each carefully crafted to deliver delicious flavour and powerful nutrition:

Lion’s Mane Powder – Known for its subtle taste and potential cognitive benefits, this powder is perfect for adding to soups, stews, or even smoothies.

Mushroom Extracts for Drinks – Ideal for your morning coffee or tea, these extracts offer a potent health boost without a strong mushroom flavour. A blend of 10 mushroom extracts, it’s a convenient and tasty addition to your daily routine.

Original Blend – A versatile mix of seven of the world’s most renowned mushrooms and mushroom extracts, this blend adds a delicious umami flavour to your favourite dishes.

Mush Mór powders stand out for their quality. They contain 100 per cent mushrooms, with no additives or fillers. Unlike cheaper powders that often use the mycelial part or bulk up with substrate, Mush Mór uses only the most nutrient-dense and flavourful fruiting body of the mushroom, ensuring you get maximum nutrition in every serving.

The powders blend 10 of the world’s most beneficial exotic mushrooms, including Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Shiitake, Chaga, Maitake, Enoki, Porcini, Oyster, and Almond mushrooms. Each offers unique benefits, from enhancing your immune system to supporting cognitive function.

For their mushroom extracts, Mush Mór uses a gentle extraction process that preserves and enhances the beneficial compounds – like polysaccharides and adaptogens – ensuring the highest quality nutrition in every spoonful.

Exotic mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, Reishi, Maitake, Chaga, and Cordyceps have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. These functional mushrooms are known for their remarkable health benefits, including: supporting overall health and wellbeing; reducing symptoms of stress and fatigue; and boosting the immune system,

Certain mushrooms can also help regulate blood sugar levels, improve digestion, and maintain hormonal balance. By adding these adaptogenic mushrooms to your diet, you can enhance your overall health and longevity.

Mush Mór powders are rich in adaptogens – a class of herbs and fungi that help the body adapt to stress. Adaptogens are known to: regulate the body’s stress response; improve immunity; and promote longevity

Best of all, they’re incredibly easy to integrate into your daily routine. Whether stirred into coffee, blended into smoothies, or sprinkled over your meal, adaptogens make maintaining balance effortless.

Mush Mór’s mushrooms are grown in natural sunlight, making them an excellent source of Vitamin D. Just one teaspoon of their Original Blend delivers 96 per cent of your daily Vitamin D needs, while their Lion’s Mane blend provides 67 per cent. All products are third-party tested to ensure quality and potency.

At Organico, we’re drawn to brands that prioritise sustainability, quality, and innovation. Mush Mór ticks all the boxes. From their eco-friendly cultivation practices to their commitment to making exotic mushrooms accessible to all, their values align perfectly with ours.

We’re also excited that Mush Mór is working toward Organic Certification, showcasing their dedication to environmental stewardship and quality. Their emphasis on affordability and honest marketing sets them apart in the crowded health food space.

These exotic mushroom powders offer a multitude of culinary benefits, starting with their ability to instantly add rich flavour to many dishes. Whether you’re sautéing, stir-frying, making soup, or creating a sauce, simply stirring in exotic mushroom powder can elevate your dish with a savoury umami depth.

Don’t forget baking! Mushroom powder can be used in earthy vegan muffins, homemade bread, or other creative baking projects. Whether adding it to your morning smoothie for a health boost or using it as a seasoning, mushroom powders are a fun way to enhance your cooking.

Mush Mór powders aren’t just for health fanatics – they’re for anyone who loves great food. Whether you’re sneaking Lion’s Mane into your kids’ spaghetti sauce or adding a touch of gourmet flair to risotto, these powders make it easy to elevate everyday meals. You can also find delicious recipe ideas on their website, including a deeply mushroomy and creamy ‘Mushroom Soup and a flavourful Mushroom Risotto’.
