If you’ve been thinking about doing something for your skin, the next few weeks are a good time to start. Here in West Cork, as we edge towards the longer, brighter days of late spring the window is shortening for treatments with ‘downtime’ The reason is straightforward: treatments that use light, laser, or energy to improve the skin require some time away from strong sunlight afterwards. It doesn’t mean we can’t do them in the summer, particularly for those who work from home and are already very careful about the sun, but it means it is much easier than trying to stay out of the sun.

Energy-based treatments have come a long way, and the options available today can address everything from sun damage and pigmentation to texture, fine lines, redness, and scarring. A life lived outdoors in this part of the world, as much as we love it, does leave its marks — and treatments like IPL, laser resurfacing, and microneedling have become the most effective ways to address those changes without surgery or significant downtime.

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is one of the most versatile of these. It uses broad-spectrum light to lift pigmentation — the brown patches and spots that accumulate from years of sun exposure — as well as tackling redness and broken capillaries. In the days after treatment, the skin can look a little flushed and pigmented spots may darken briefly before they clear, which is completely normal and a sign the treatment is doing its job. It’s also precisely why you want cloud cover and short days on your side while you recover.

For those dealing with more significant concerns — deeper lines, acne scarring, sun-damaged texture — Erbium YAG laser resurfacing is worth knowing about. It works by precisely removing the outer layers of skin, prompting a fresher, smoother surface to regenerate in its place. The results can be quite remarkable, but recovery takes a week and sun avoidance during that time isn’t optional, it’s essential. That makes this treatment one of the most time-sensitive in terms of when in the year to schedule it.

Microneedling works on a different principle entirely, rather than light or heat, it uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled injuries in the skin, which triggers the body’s own healing response and a meaningful boost in collagen production. It’s particularly well suited to improving skin texture, softening fine lines, reducing pore size, and helping with scarring, and it tends to suit a broader range of skin types than laser treatments do. Most people need a course of sessions a few weeks apart, so starting now means you can complete that course comfortably before the height of summer.

Whatever you choose, or even if you choose nothing at all, there’s one thing that matters more than any treatment: daily SPF. Not just on holiday, not just when the sun is out. Every single day. The UV index in Ireland is lower than in southern Europe, but it is never zero, and the slow accumulation of daily UV exposure is responsible for the majority of skin ageing. For those who form pigmentation you must also think about High Energy Visible Light (screens and overhead lights) and for this reason should be wearing a mineral SPF; mineral SPFs are also good for those with more sensitive skin. And finally a wide-brimmed hat, as unfashionable as it might feel, remains one of the most effective things you can put between your skin and the sun. The weather around here is so unpredictable I carry a roll up one in my handbag in case I get caught out sitting outside Bushes in Baltimore on what started as a grey day and ended with a tropical sunset!

So if you have started thinking about treatments for your skin now is a great time to start.

Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life and the wanting to look and feel your absolute best is entirely understandable. As a medical doctor working in aesthetic medicine, I’ve helped countless brides, grooms, and their families prepare their skin for the big day. The most important lesson I’ve learned? Good results take time. The earlier you start planning, the better.

Whether you’re the bride, groom, mother of the bride, or mother of the groom, this guide will walk you through what treatments to consider and, crucially, when to schedule them.

If there’s one piece of advice I give every patient coming to me before a wedding, it’s this: book your first consultation at least six months out. This gives us the time to see how your skin responds to treatments, make adjustments, and complete courses of therapy that simply can’t be rushed.

At this stage, two priorities come to the fore: starting a personalised skincare regime and, if anti-wrinkle injections are something you’re considering, having your first or most recent treatment now.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections (commonly known by the brand name Botox, though several products are available) work by relaxing specific muscles to soften lines around the forehead, eyes, and brow. They are one of the most commonly-requested treatments before a wedding – and for good reason. When done well and at the right time, they produce a refreshed, natural look that photographs beautifully.

I recommend that anyone new to anti-wrinkle treatments has their first appointment at least six months before the wedding. This serves several purposes. It allows us to assess how you respond to treatment, fine-tune the dosage at a follow-up, and – just as importantly – gives you time to decide whether you like the results. Everyone metabolises these treatments differently; some people find the effects last three months, others closer to five.

For those already familiar with anti-wrinkle treatments, I advise scheduling a top-up appointment four to six weeks before the wedding. This timing ensures the product has fully settled and any minor touch-ups can be made before the day itself. Arriving at your wedding with treatment that was done the week before is not something I’d recommend, as you want everything looking natural and settled.

This advice applies equally to mothers of the bride and groom. It’s a day when all eyes — and camera lenses — are on the whole family, and many women in their 50s and 60s find that a carefully considered treatment plan makes a significant difference to how they feel on the day.

Skincare

No treatment will compensate for neglected daily skincare. A consistent, medically-guided regime is the single most effective investment you can make in your skin’s long-term health and its appearance on your wedding day.

Ideally, start a new skincare protocol six months before the wedding. Three months is workable, but you’ll see a more significant improvement with the longer lead time. A good medical-grade regime typically includes a vitamin A (retinoid) product to stimulate collagen and accelerate cell turnover, a serum for brightening and antioxidant protection, SPF every single morning without exception, and targeted treatments for any specific concerns such as pigmentation, redness, or congestion.

A word of caution: introducing new active ingredients too close to the wedding can cause temporary redness or sensitivity. This is another reason the six-month timeline is so valuable – it gives your skin time to adapt, and gives us time to troubleshoot.

Microneedling and Laser Resurfacing

For those looking to address texture, scarring, pigmentation, or early signs of ageing more intensively, treatments like microneedling and laser resurfacing can produce remarkable results. However, these are not last-minute options.

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. A course of three to four sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, is typically recommended. To see the full benefit, collagen remodelling continues for months after the final treatment but you must begin at least four to six months before your wedding.

Laser resurfacing, particularly fractional laser treatments, work on a similar principle but can address concerns at a deeper level. Depending on the intensity of treatment, there may be a period of redness or peeling during recovery. Starting this process four to six months out ensures the skin has fully healed and the collagen response has matured well before the wedding.

These treatments are equally appropriate for mothers-of-the-bride and groom, particularly those looking to address skin concerns that have developed over decades. The results can be genuinely transformative when given adequate time.

Medical-grade Facials

For those who have left things a little late, or who simply want a final boost in the weeks before the wedding, then medical-grade facials are an excellent option. We tailor treatments to your concerns and can improve skin tone, hydration, and luminosity with minimal downtime. These can safely be performed within two to four weeks of the wedding and are particularly good at giving skin that ‘fresh and glowing’ appearance that makes such a difference in photographs.

In the final week before the wedding, I recommend sticking to your regular skincare routine and avoiding anything new. This is not the time for experimentation.

Every face is different, and a treatment plan that works beautifully for one person may not be right for another. I would always encourage anyone considering aesthetic treatments – for a wedding or otherwise – to seek a thorough consultation with a qualified medical professional first. The goal is never to look ‘done’; it’s to look like the very best version of yourself.

Every January, many of us take a moment to pause after the Christmas rush and reflect on our health. The longer evenings, the fresh start of a new year, and a collective desire to feel better in ourselves make January a natural time to think about wellbeing. For some, that may mean walking more, improving sleep, or addressing long‑standing health concerns. For others, it brings up questions about weight, metabolism, and how these affect overall health.

As a local doctor working in private practice, I see first‑hand how complex and personal weight management can be. Despite popular belief, weight is not simply a matter of willpower. It is influenced by genetics, hormones, life stage, stress, sleep, medications, and our environment. Understanding this complexity is an important first step toward a healthier and more compassionate approach to weight loss.

We often focus on weight in isolation, but medically it is only one piece of the puzzle. Excess weight can increase the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems, and fatty liver disease. At the same time, repeated cycles of dieting and weight regain can take a toll both physically and mentally.

A medical approach to weight management looks beyond the scales. It considers blood sugar control, cholesterol, blood pressure, mobility, energy levels, sleep quality, and mental wellbeing. The goal is not rapid or extreme weight loss, but sustainable improvement in health.

One of the most important developments in recent years has been a better understanding of appetite regulation. Our sense of hunger and fullness is controlled by a complex system of hormones produced in the gut and brain. These hormones influence how hungry we feel, how quickly we feel full, and even how our body stores energy.

When someone has struggled with weight for many years, this system may be dysregulated. This helps explain why ‘eat less and move more’ advice often fails in the longterm, and why people can feel intense hunger even when eating what appears to be a reasonable diet.

What Are GLP‑1 Medications? You may have heard about GLP‑1 medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro in the news or on social media. GLP‑1 stands for glucagon‑like peptide‑1, a hormone that is naturally produced in the gut. It plays a role in regulating appetite, slowing stomach emptying, and improving blood sugar control.

Medications based on GLP‑1 have been used for many years in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. More recently, they have also been approved for use in obesity management in certain patients. By enhancing the body’s natural signals of fullness, these medications can help reduce appetite and support gradual, sustained weight loss.

It is important to note that GLP‑1 medications are not a quick fix or a cosmetic solution. They are prescription medications that require medical assessment, ongoing monitoring, and lifestyle support. They are not suitable for everyone and, like all medications, can have side effects. A careful discussion of benefits, risks, and alternatives is essential.

Even with advances in medical treatment, lifestyle remains central to good health. Nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management all play crucial roles. In fact, medications such as GLP‑1s tend to work best when combined with realistic dietary changes, regular physical activity, and behavioural support.

In West Cork, we are fortunate to have access to fresh local produce, beautiful walking routes, and a strong sense of community. These are powerful assets when it comes to supporting healthier habits. Small, consistent changes – such as increasing protein intake, improving meal timing, or finding enjoyable ways to move – can make a meaningful difference over time.

As we move into a new year, the conversation around weight and health is evolving. There is growing recognition that evidence‑based, medically supervised approaches can offer safe and effective options for people who have struggled for years.

If there is one message to take into January, it is this: health is not about perfection, and weight is not a moral issue. Whether your goal is more energy, better mobility, improved blood results, or simply feeling more comfortable in your body, support is available.

Taking the first step often begins with an informed conversation – one that is grounded in science, guided by medical expertise, and rooted in kindness toward ourselves.

In the past, a wrinkle-free face was considered a universal marker of youth. However, today’s beauty ideal has evolved. There is a noticeable shift towards the pursuit of a more youthful, dewy, and radiant complexion rather than a perfectly taut, wrinkle-free face. This change can be attributed to the increasing emphasis on ‘skin health’ over ‘anti-aging’. Modern beauty influencers and celebrities like Beyoncé, Gigi Hadid, and Rihanna have championed the glow-over-static look and, in the world of aesthetic medicine, the rise of non-invasive aesthetic treatments, away from injectables, has played a key role in this shift. Devices that focus on improving skin tone, texture, and elasticity – such as microneedling, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), and fractional non-ablative lasers – offer patients the ability to maintain a fresh appearance without turning to more dramatic measures like facelifts or heavy filler use. Let’s take a look at some of these devices.

Microneedling: The collagen-boosting wonder

Microneedling is one of the most popular treatments for rejuvenating skin. The procedure involves using tiny, sterilised needles that create microscopic punctures in the skin’s surface. These controlled injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, leading to increased collagen and elastin production. The result? Tighter, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles and a more even tone.

The benefits of microneedling include booting collaging, improving skin texture and can be used to improve the appearance of scars. There is minimal downtime compared to other treatments with around 24 hours of redness. Although minimal downtime is a benefit, it does mean to achieve optimal results you may need a number of sessions. Results take time.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): The multi-tasking skin saviour

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a versatile treatment that uses light to target pigment, blood vessels, and other skin imperfections. Unlike lasers, which typically use a single wavelength of light, IPL emits a broad spectrum of light that can be absorbed by different skin issues like sun spots, redness, and pigmentation. IPL is particularly effective for treating sunspots, age spots, and melasma, giving the skin a more even tone. It can help reduce visible blood vessels and redness, particularly for those with rosacea. IPL can also encourage the production of collagen, improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of fine lines. The downtime really is minimal with IPL – some people even having it done on their lunch break.

While IPL is a great and versatile treatment, it has a few downsides. IPL can make your skin temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so diligent sun protection is required post-treatment. Because IPL targets pigment, those with darker skin tones may not see the same results and could be at a higher risk for pigmentation changes.

Fractional non-ablative lasers: precision with minimal downtime

Fractional non-ablative lasers are designed to treat the skin in a very targeted way, improving texture and tone without completely removing the top layer of skin. These lasers work by creating thousands of tiny, controlled ‘wounds’ in the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.

Fractional lasers target a wide range of skin concerns including fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and melasma. Because the laser doesn’t fully remove the skin’s surface, the recovery time is shorter than with ablative lasers such as CO2. Redness and swelling may last a few days, but this is often manageable compared with 10-14 days of deep redness and swelling which goes with an ablative laser. The fractional approach allows for precise treatment, with fewer risks of side effects compared to traditional ablative lasers.

Like microneedling, fractional lasers often require several treatments to achieve optimal results. While the downtime is shorter than with other treatments, expect some discomfort and redness for a few days followed by some skin flaking and dryness for a few more days. Fractional laser treatments can be more expensive than other non-invasive options, making it less accessible for some.

One of the most appealing aspects of these non-invasive treatments is their versatility. They are not one-size-fits-all solutions but can be tailored to suit a variety of skin types, concerns, and personal goals.Whether you’re dealing with acne scars, pigmentation issues, fine lines, or simply want a healthy glow, there is a device designed to meet your needs.

Moreover, the appeal of these treatments extends beyond age and skin type. While younger individuals often seek out these devices for preventative reasons or to maintain their glow, older clients appreciate the ability to improve the texture and quality of their skin without undergoing surgery. The non-invasive nature of these treatments makes them accessible to a broad range of people looking for subtle yet noticeable improvements.

Finally, these treatments are popular because they require little downtime, allowing busy individuals to incorporate them into their lives without the inconvenience of lengthy recovery periods. The desire for subtle, natural enhancements that improve the overall health and appearance of the skin is universal, and these devices meet that demand effectively.

In recent years, weight management has become a growing concern worldwide, and Ireland is no exception. With rising obesity rates and an increasing number of individuals seeking effective weight loss solutions, new treatments are constantly being explored. One such treatment that has garnered significant attention is the class of medication known as GLP-1 inhibitors. Originally designed to treat Type 2 diabetes, it is now showing great promise in the world of weight loss.

Obesity and overweight are complex issues, which elicit a lot of emotion and often negativity. There is a poor understanding of the causes of obesity but it’s more than just calories in and movement – we now know there is a huge genetic component, and that the modern food and marketing environment does not help.

GLP-1 inhibitors, or GLP-1 receptor agonists, are a class of medication that mimic the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Naturally, GLP-1 is released by the intestines in response to food, helping to regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release and reducing the production of glucose by the liver.

These medications were originally developed for diabetes but what makes them particularly interesting in the realm of weight loss is their ability to reduce appetite and slow down gastric emptying, which makes you feel fuller for longer after eating. Some of the most widely known include semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss) and liraglutide (Saxenda). The newest to the Irish market is called Mounjaro and is licensed specifically for weight loss.

GLP-1 inhibitors help with weight loss through a combination of biological processes that target appetite and food intake. GLP-1 is a hormone that affects the brain’s hunger signals. When these medications are introduced, they mimic this natural process, leading to a reduced sensation of hunger. Patients tend to feel less hungry and more satisfied after eating, which ultimately leads to consuming fewer calories.

Many overweight and obese patients also suffer from ‘food noise’. ‘Food noise’ refers to persistent, often intrusive thoughts about food, even when you’re not physically hungry. It can lead to overeating or unhealthy eating behaviours but even more importantly it can really affect your quality of life. These intrusive thoughts can make enjoyment of everyday activities difficult as you battle with thoughts of food and guilt around these thoughts. These new medications seem to help reduce ‘food noise’ for many patients.

GLP-1 inhibitors are primarily prescribed for people with obesity or overweight who are struggling to lose weight through lifestyle changes alone. In Ireland, these medications are often considered for individuals with a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 27 with associated conditions like hypertension or high cholesterol. These are still medications and are to be used for the treatment of obesity – they are not a quick diet fix for those already at a healthy weight. Unfortunately many celebrities have been abusing these medications, which has led to a lot of negative press.

While GLP-1 inhibitors are most commonly used in people with Type 2 diabetes to help with weight loss, they are also increasingly prescribed to those without diabetes, particularly in patients with obesity. The rise in obesity rates in Ireland has prompted healthcare professionals to explore new options for weight management, and GLP-1 inhibitors are fast becoming a leading treatment.

It’s important to note that GLP-1 inhibitors should not be seen as a substitute for healthy lifestyle changes. They are most effective when used in combination with a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Patients who are prescribed these medications should commit to a long-term plan for health improvement, incorporating these elements into their daily routine.

Like all medications, GLP-1 inhibitors must be prescribed carefully and monitored for any potential side effects. It is important that you are taking these medications under the supervision of a medical professional. In Ireland there are reports of ‘black market’ Ozempic pens and this is very worrying. While these drugs are generally well-tolerated, they are still medication and come with risks and side-effects like any other medication.

GLP-1 inhibitors are not suitable for everyone. They are contraindicated in individuals with a history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, due to a risk of thyroid tumours. They should also be used with caution in individuals with a history of severe gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastroparesis.

As with any medication, they require regular follow-up visits with a healthcare provider. Monitoring includes tracking weight loss progress, managing side effects, and adjusting the dosage if necessary. You should also be supported in making the lifestyle changes required to maintain your weight loss.

While GLP-1 inhibitors offer significant benefits, they can be costly, and access to these medications may be limited by health insurance or availability within the public health system. There is also currently an issue with supply of these medications in Ireland, which may make it more difficult to find a pharmacy which can supply them. This is changing as manufacturer supply is increasing but it is something to bear in mind.

While they are not a magic bullet, these medications represent an important step forward in the management of obesity, especially when combined with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. However, it is important to remember that these medications are for the treatment of obesity and overweight and must be used appropriately and under the supervision of a medical professional.

As a doctor working in aesthetic medicine, one of the things I love most about my job is how fast the field evolves. New treatments are always popping up, offering fresh solutions for everything from aging and skin health to overall beauty. While this rapid pace is exciting, it can also be a bit overwhelming at times. There are so many options available, and it can be tough to figure out which treatments are truly worth bringing into my clinic.

In recent years, I’ve noticed a shift in the industry toward more regenerative treatments. More and more patients and doctors are looking for ways to enhance skin tone and texture, subtly improve features, and help reverse the visible signs of aging. It’s all about working with the body’s natural ability to renew and repair itself. One treatment that has really caught my attention in this regard is the use of polynucleotides.

Polynucleotides are naturally derived molecules that have been shown to work wonders for skin rejuvenation. After seeing their potential, I knew I had to bring them into my clinic. I want to share with you what makes them so special and why I believe they could be a game-changer for your skin.

At their core, polynucleotides are chains of small molecules that are essential for cell repair and regeneration. They essentially help your body heal itself and encourage new, healthy cell growth. When sourced from natural materials like salmon DNA, these molecules can be used to boost the skin’s natural ability to rejuvenate. In aesthetic treatments, polynucleotides help stimulate the skin to renew itself, leading to smoother, healthier, and more youthful-looking skin.

When injected into the skin, polynucleotides set off a series of regenerative processes. They help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are key to maintaining the skin’s strength, elasticity, and firmness. These molecules also help improve skin hydration, boost cellular metabolism, and increase oxygenation in the skin. As a result, they work together to repair damaged skin, reduce visible signs of aging, and promote overall skin renewal.

As we age, our collagen production naturally slows down, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and a loss of firmness. Polynucleotides stimulate the cells responsible for collagen production, helping to increase collagen synthesis and restore the skin’s youthful appearance. They also promote better hydration by encouraging the skin to retain more water, making your skin look plumper and more hydrated.

Beyond collagen and hydration, polynucleotides help regenerate skin cells, which is crucial for maintaining the skin’s natural barrier and overall health. This is especially important for addressing issues like dryness, dullness, and the fine lines that come with aging.

There are so many ways polynucleotides can be used to rejuvenate the skin, which is why I’m so excited to bring them into my practice. One of the most common uses for polynucleotide treatments is overall skin rejuvenation. As we get older, our skin can become dull, dry, and less elastic. By injecting polynucleotides, I can help stimulate collagen production, improve hydration, and enhance the skin’s texture. The result is firmer, smoother, and more radiant skin.

Polynucleotides are particularly effective for people in their 30s and 40s who are looking to intervene early and keep the signs of aging at bay. The treatments are often targeted at areas that show the first signs of aging – like the face, neck, and décolletage – and can help prevent deeper lines and wrinkles from forming.

I’m also thrilled to offer polynucleotides for the delicate skin under the eyes. This area tends to show aging first, with fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles being common concerns. However until now we have not had much we could offer non-surgically for this area. Polynucleotides help to thicken the skin in this area, improving its texture and giving it a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

Another benefit of polynucleotides is their ability to treat scars, including acne scars. They stimulate collagen production and help regenerate damaged skin cells, leading to softer, flatter scars and smoother, more even skin.

What I love most about polynucleotides is that they offer a natural, subtle solution for improving skin appearance. They’re derived from natural sources and are generally very well-tolerated by the body. Side effects are rare, with the most common being mild redness or swelling at the injection site, which typically goes away within a few hours to a few days.

Unlike some treatments that give dramatic, immediate results, the effects of polynucleotide treatments develop gradually. This means that the improvements happen slowly over time, which results in a more natural look. For those who prefer a discreet approach to rejuvenation, this is a huge advantage. The changes are noticeable, but they don’t scream ‘treatment’. They just make your skin look fresher and healthier.

I am so excited to be able to offer polynucleotides in clinic, as they fit so well with our pro-aging, light-touch philosophy around medical aesthetics.
